Anyone been to Madrid?
If so can you provide me some suggestions on what to do there? My family is going the first week of April. Just looking for some advice on the absolute must see in Madrid.

Yeah a long time ago but hit the palace, it is insane, really is. Oh and don't eat hamburgers, i chose not to and from my mate's resulting sickness it was a good idea.

Lived there for four years - it is a beautiful city. Much to see and much to do. See the palace and the museums. Go to the bull ring. Go to Plaza Mayor. Eat at Casa Paco's near Plaza Mayor and have tapas near Plaza Mayor. Take a day trip to Valle de los Caídos (Valley of the Fallen) which is about 30 minutes from Madrid. Enjoy your time there - wish I were going back!

My tip of the day is for this city that you do not have a bachelor party there.

Botins in Plaza Mayor
Madrid is a fabulous city! Beautiful women abound and the food is terrific. Highly recommend "Botin's" in Plaza Mayor. Go for the suckling lamb or pig. To die for.
Remember Spaniards don't start eating until about 10:00PM or later. Expect to dine and party until the sun comes up! Hit some Tapas bars for starters but save your appetite for Botin. http://www.botin.es/en |

Probably the most often recommended places to check out are the Royal Palace (as metioned above), the Prado Museum, and the Plaza Mayor. There's also a couple large gardens/parks around the museum that are worth a visit. There's a visitors center in the Plaza Mayor that will provide suggestions (and maps) free of charge. The young ladies at the visitors center are extremely nice, and typically extremely attractive. Everything is in walking distance from the Plaza. I stayed a couple blocks from the Prado and never used a cab once. You can explore most of Madrids "attractions" in two or three days. There's a train station a couple blocks from the museum, and the high speed trains make a quick trip to another city very possible. I think you can get to Seville in a little over an hour. If you can, I highly recommend you spend a day or two in Seville.

Spain is a wonderful place and Madrid is fantastic. The museums and history are amazing though and the people are great. The suggestions about pick-pockets is exactly right and in all travels, European, don't dress like an American!!

The food and architecture are worth the trip alone. I'd love to return as the place left a sizable impression on me even ~25 years later.

I was there 20 years ago. Can't really add much to what has already been said.
I do have a funny story though. I was 20 and with one of my friends when I was there. We walked by a park where some guys were playing basketball. We thought what the heck lets see if we can get in a game or two. He was about 6' 4" and 230 lbs and played basketball in school. I was 6'2" 180 and played soccer in school. So both of us were athletic. Neither of us spoke Spanish though. They were cool and welcomed us to play. Very friendly especially when they learned we were from the USA. Anyhow we started playing and completely dominated them lol. By the time we were done about an hour later the park was packed with their friends. They were subbing in people trying to beat us. The place was packed by the time we left. Fun times!

No but I'd like to. Was looking into booking flights to Spain this September on the Iberia Airlines deal ($256 RT) but I guess we waited too long (had other shit going on) and all the good dates were gone and flight cost went up to almost $400. Lol

There's plenty of deals to Europe for $400 on decent airlines that give you food and allowance for check-in baggage. $400 on a low budget airline defeats the purpose IMO. Those airlines have tiny ass seats too. Unless one is a midget it's crazy for a 12 hour non-stop flight.

But seriously, I flew back from Charlotte to SFO on an American airlines flight and it was one of the most uncomfortable flights I have ever had. The seat cushion wasn't long enough to support my thighs. Couldn't even put my legs up because it was too short. Brother who works in the industry told me that all the new planes are trying to squeeze more passengers in hence the smaller seats. |
