530i ZF trans dilemma

2007 530i, 244,000 miles on the car.
Bought the car used less than a year ago, what doing the typical hard shifts up and down, sometimes faulting etc. Faulted two days ago, cleared codes (but didn't read them first ) and the tranny won't engage in gear now. Engine rpms change as you switch gears but no movement. I checked with my scanner, it is registering that it's changing gear. Pulled it home, put it up on jackstands and checked fluid level, it was low. We added almost 5 quarts to the tranny, still won't t engage in gear. Pushed out some really nasty dirty fluid in the process which kind of confirms my fears. My million dollar question: replace the solenoids, pan and filter, sleeve and bridge seal for $500 and hope it works or take it to a shop which with charge me probably $2500 and hope it works?? Do you think it messed up anything other than the solenoids by being low on fluid? Is there any way to check? I have a Foxwell Scanner for the car. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
