Thats a troll. They are jealous or have low self esteem and by engaging others in debates they feel as though they are interacting on some level and use that to try and forget their sadness and loneliness. Feel sorry for them, cause they dont have much else in life.

OR

Are you talking about fire/ice/rock/etc trolls that I battle in rpgs? They are human like giants with elemental powers that carry a big stick and cause major damage. Best to fight them when you are a high level.

While Prowess' definition is accurate, I'll add that sometimes poeple troll because they are bored and just don't care.

Hence, the notion of doing something 'for the lulz' comes into play.
