If you are a scuba diver and you want your watch to represent your passion - go for the Rolex Deep Sea. If you more a car guy - then the Daytona.

Watches are very personal and make a statement about yourself.

Both are great watches. But Rolex isn't the only game in town - look at IWC, Jaeger LeCoutre, Audemars Piguet, etc. Any top end mechanical watch is a wonderful thing to own and wear.

Deep Sea Dweller no question! One of my absolute favorites, largest of the Rolex collection which is by no means large compared to other brands. Will wear the heaviest and be the most bulky but again not compared to other brands. It's definitely on my list of future purchases, would look fantastic dressed up or with jeans and a T!

I'd go Daytona.

I'm not a huge watch guy, so correct me if I'm wrong. But can't you get an entry level Patel Phillipe for the price of an upper level Daytona? If thats right you may want to look at that option.

Get an IWC or JLC for that money. But if you insist (for reasons unknown to human kind), get a Daytona with Zenith movement. This is the second series of Daytona watches and introduced in 1988. They have 5 digit model numbers.

I certainly wouldn't consider the fact that a Stainless Daytona has appreciated in price about 9.2%/year since 1973.

In comparison, the S&P 500 has averaged about 6.7% over the same time period (Aug-73-June-12)

Just ballpark math, but a Daytona in 1973 was $415? Methinks your 9.2% rate is just a little off. That's assuming full retail of a steel Daytona at $14k.

That wasn't really the point I was trying to make. Obviously there are more variables to that equation. My point was that Rolex timepieces may not be the best value strictly from a mechanical and build quality standpoint, but they have always been in high demand, and there has been a serious price appreciation over the past 40 years.

However here was my thought process:
I used this price evolution sheet: http://minus4plus6.com/PriceEvolution.htm

August 1973- Stainless Daytona $386
June 2012- Stainless Daytona $12000
i=Interest Rate/Year

$386(1+i)^39=$12000
(1+i)^39=31.088
i=9.2%/year

If we used your numbers:
$415(1+i)^39=$14000
(1+i)39=33.73
I=9.44%/year

EDIT- Didn't mean for any of that to come off rude. I'm a Finance guy so I get off to numbers.

Have loved Daytona for many years. Can't justify dropping the cash on it when I don't wear watches I currently own.

Have always been told, if you want a watch get an Omega (speedmaster or seamaster), if you want jewelry, go for Rolex.

Not bad, but there is a lot more than just Omega to say you have a watch over jewelry. Panerai, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Vacheron Constantin, Patek Philippe, Breguet, A. Lange & Sohne.... Just to name a few

No offense, I am too. I was using 2013, which explains our different starting point. It appears that we're actually in the right area for pricing of an early 70's Daytona. I had a gold GMT that appreciated at about the same rate while I owned it, so I'm not that surprised at how the numbers play out, I just wasn't expecting the 70's pricing to be that low.

C'mon, anything above a $5 Casio is jewelry.

Both are pretty cool but I think it depends on your wrist size.
I tried the steel / white dial daytona but it looked akward. Tiny (40 mm in fact), compared to my other watches
The (deep sea) sea dweller looked much better (44 min) I am definitely no Rolex fanboy but I gotta say I love this watch.
