Bosch reinvents the Sun Visor

Car's headliner like a standard sun visor, but it consists of a transparent screen with liquid crystal cells that can selectively, individually be made opaque.

Bosch's Virtual Visor will automatically block out the sun's glare when and where it's needed, leaving the rest of the panel transparent for greater visibility.

That is some useful technology. I want one.

I have felt like for years, since the technology has been around, that the entire windscreen should just be much more interactive. At a bare minimum it should have dimming capabilities.

I already have this technology in my car. It's called "Ray-Ban"

It's even better than the Bosch technology since it is portable from car to car.

Except when you need to replace it every three years because of rock chips. Which is why the technology is inside.

As for the sun visor. Interesting idea but as already said the cell frame will need to be made transparent as well.

It's a Bosch sun visor so what the heck is it doing in a late model GM full size truck?

If Bosch wants to reinvent sun visors, how about adapting aircraft cockpit visor rails for automotive use? I would drop serious coin for that every morning/evening at this time of year with our low sun angles.....

I don't buy that at all. I've only had 14 cars in my life, but I've never had to replace a windshield. Secondly, I'm sure the technology exists to keep the windshield from collecting chips. Hell, even a thin layer of self-healing Xpel could do that.

I'm sure there are good reasons that the technology doesn't exist yet, but argument is that it's a foregone conclusion, so why not work on it now? The more autonomous vehicles come, and that's a foregone conclusion as well, the more the windscreen, windows, and back-light can be used as a landscape for entertainment (and it will).

Then it is apparent you have not driven a lot in South Florida. Between all the construction and their “dirt” being more like cement, windshield damage is unavoidable.

This is easier, more convenient and probably much cheaper. And it has been available as Bosch was trying to invent something that needs to be a simple gadget by overengineering it!

I've only had 40 cars and only changed the front windshield 9 times.

Well many of us don't live in boring middle-earth. Windshield replacement is common, no matter what your experience is with it. There wouldn't be so many windshield replacement companies around if it wasn't.

Looks like they need to reinvent the stupid air bag sticker that would ruin this.
