Heading to San Francisco this weekend
My wife & I are heading to San Francisco this weekend for our anniversary (5 years). We've never been, and don't really know of much to do there.
I think we'll go to a Giants game on Friday night, but that's all we have discussed. Any suggestions? thanks. |

the main tourist spots is going to Fisherman's Wharf & that Union Square (station?) area where it is almost like a mall.
Golden Gate Bridge is also the norm. If you drive a little north of SF, there are redwood trees that you can walk by on a trail that are huge (but it's kind of boring). |

Pier 39/Fisherman's wharf has a lot of touristy things to do. You can walk along the pier and check out all the shops, restaurants. You can take a boat ride that goes under the Golden Gate bridge and around Alcatraz island. You can also sign up for those bus tour rides if you don't want to walk, etc..
About 5 minutes from there is Union Square. You can park in the Union Square garage and walk around the area and go shopping. Macys, Neiman Marcus, etc... From there you can walk towards Market Street and there's a big shopping center there as well. Lombard street is where the crooked road is which is another tourist spot. I'm sure I forgot a lot more, but there's been more than a few threads similar to yours so you may want to do a search and read some other people's suggestions. Or just go on google and type in san francisco tourist information or something and you'll get a lot of hits of what there's to do. It can get chilly in SF so make sure you bring a jacket just in case. |

There was already a similar thread earlier about what to do in SF. I'm sure this will answer a lot of questions:

Matt Cain is pitching vs St Louis on Friday, should be a good game.
I'd check out the new Cal Academy facility in Golden Gate Park (across from the De Young Museum). http://www.calacademy.org/ Alcatraz Island makes for a interesting trip (leaving from Pier 33). Fort Point, below the Golden Gate Bridge is cool. Weather is suppose to be okay. Good luck.

We just got back this evening, and overall, it was a very disappointing trip. We will not be going back anytime soon. |

I was wondering the same thing. What about the wineries beyond SF? My gf wants to go to Napa.

We didn't go to the wineries, but SF was filthy & riddled with very aggressive homeless people (and I live/work in downtown dallas, so I am accustomed to being around a lot of homeless people). Overall I found most people very rude.
We did make it out to Muir Woods & Beach, that was very nice. Golden Gate park is nice. If you go, go for three days, not five. |
