Failed Water Pump?
One morning my moms 2010 E60's Fan started running full blast the second I stated the car a few minutes later I get the yellow overheat warning followed by the red pull your shit over now warning. Expansion tank has coolant, I can hear the water pump when starting the bleeding process but do not see the coolant stream in the expansion tank with cap open. When I squeeze the hoses I can hear the coolant swishing around so would think there is still some coolant in the system. Based on what I found, is the pimp indeed bad? I can let the car sit overnight and start it cold and the Fan will go off full blast just a few seconds after starting which confuses me. I don't see any coolant leaks either. My mom spend a few grand to have the Turbo's and a few other things replaced. I know she doesn't want to dump any more money into so would rather sell. If cheap/easy to replace the water pump/Thermostat I'll pay for it myself to have fix but wanted to see if this indeed will fix the issue so hoping someone has experienced this.

I understand that the (electric) water pump fails about every 80,000 miles. Mine did exactly that about 6 months ago and had the same symptoms as you describe. The engine would be hot though, not doing this from a cold start.
Don't drive it beyond a mile or two to a repair shop. Or better still, have it towed - I called AAA and had it towed to the dealer. Good luck PS I do think you can do the water pump replacement yourself. I think mine was $800 at the dealership but I can't recall the exact price |

Thanks Deveray, I had my neighbor (BMW Shop Foreman) confirm water pump failure. I will be towing it to either a well known reputable Euro mechanic or the dealership where my neighbor works depending on who can get me the better pricing. I thought about doing it my self but all my mechanic friends said it's much easier to do at a shop and these guys do side jobs all the time.

You don't say the mileage, but with BMW's in general it's good practice to change the pump and tstat somewhere between 60 and 90K miles. And the radiator as well, more towards 90K. By the way don't let them change the pump without doing the tstat. It's literally right there, it needs to be done and you'll save a lot of labor cost by doing it at the same time.

Quick question- I'm looking to purchase an e61 with the n54 and was about to leave to buy it today, but the guy said he took it for a ride and it started steaming and there was coolant all over the engine bay. He says no lights came on for this issue, which leads me to believe that it isn't an overheating issue? He sent me a picture and it looks like it most likely got on the headers and burnt off creating smoke, not from overheating. But he also said he could hear the fan going pretty good and that he let it cool for an hour, added coolant, and was able to drive home 30 min.
This car is pretty cheap but I am worried that it could be a head gasket or something. Any ideas what the issue could be? water pump, expansion tank crack, coolant line crack or similar, head gasket. I just want to know what I'm getting into. The car is 1.5 hour from me and I planned on driving it home, but not if I have to take an hour break every 30 minutes. Thank you for the help! |
