Would you want to know?

With websites like https://www.23andme.com/en-ca/ being able to provide information on Inherited Conditions, Genetic Risk Factors, Traits and Drug Response would you pay the $200 to know?

I'm on the fence. After getting type 2 diabetes at 33 years old I'm curious knowing what else can possibly be in store for me. (Am I going to lose my John Stamos like hair?) Or is ignorance bliss? Take each day as it comes?

Has anyone done this? How do you feel about giving your DNA to a company to analyze?

I personally have never thought about it but I'd rather not know, then I would be constantly thinking about it in the back of my mind.

I would pass. It would cost me less than 200 to do complete blood work,
If I go cheap, I will try to have interest in 1/2mil life policy, and I will get a free blood work result.

My mother: 61, no illnesses
Mothers sister 66, no illnessess
Mothers brother: Nada
Their mom: Died at 85, nothing prior the last two months
Mothers dad: Fucktard but lived long anyway.

Common for all people of that side of the family: Horrible personalities, cruelty towards others, bitter and dwelling on that for at least 60% of their lives.

Dads side:

Dad, died at 60, cancer.
Grandpa: 82, stroke.
Dads mom: 59, cancer.
Dads moms 5 siblings: Cancer 58-59 years of age.

Me: I try to make sure I won't end up like my mothers side. Life span is irrelevant. I'd be very happy if I got to see my kids reach adulthood but I value every day I have and I will not want treatment when my time with the big C comes. We'll see if i stand by my thoughts then.

To answer the question op, I try not to worry about any of them. I eat healthily, and enjoy life. I prefer to face these when the time comes.

Were I of child-bearing age, I might consider it.

With 2 grown and one going to be Junior in HS, not so interested any more.

All you can do is eat healthy, exercise a bit and enjoy life to the fullest. The rest is in someone's else's hands...

Doesn't Vancouver have good heroin? I just got a image of Tara starring in Trainspotting without all the weird accents.

...yea, I'm on the no side. Many in my immediate family tree have lived long lives without issues - even though several have made poor health choices with regard to diet and smoking.

Outside of self inflicted physical injuries, healthy as a horse here...

I worry enough as is no way would I want to do that. Plus there are many conditions and diseases you can't really do anything about as far as preventing them. So knowing that I was predisposed to one would just be eating away at me constantly.

+1 on this. Blood work won't tell you if you have Lynch Syndrome (HPNCC) or the other myriad genetic "defects" which would raise your risk levels for various cancers. Angelina Jolie had a genetics test done which contributed to her decision for a double mastectomy and oophorectomy to prevent the high probability of her getting breast or ovarian cancer.

It's definitely an individual choice and requires a lot of thought on what one would do if there is some "bad" news. On the flip side as mentioned above with Angelina, if you had early warning on something that you have a high risk of developing and there are things you can do now to prevent it, I would think many of you all would do this.

On the flip side, these genetic tests are not 100% fool proof. I'm a classic example of this. I'm in remission from Stage 3b Colon Cancer. I had no familial risk factors. Under the stupid artificial 50 years old guidelines for screening. I led a pretty active lifestyle. Yet I got it. The oncologist was concerned I may have some genetic issue (ie Lynch) and had a test done on the tumor they extracted. Test came back negative.

Having actually faced my mortality, I would say I would probably want to know. As it'll help me frame up things I need to do to ensure my personal affairs are in order. Had I had any indication I would develop cancer, I would have done lots of things differently. Namely have a life insurance policy. I didn't get one because I was single. I got married after going through cancer treatment. Now I can't get any life insurance without paying an arm and a leg for one until I reach 5 years post diagnosis. The only life insurance I can currently get is through the group policy from my employer which I took to the max limit of $500k without needing a medical work up. I spend lots of mental energy thinking of what I need to do to ensure my wife and baby daughter are financially set if I have a recurrence which isn't treatable/curable.
