New York travel question

Uber vs rental between LaGuardia - Tarrytown- Peekskill: what's the best in my situation?

Hi, we are going to the east coast for a wedding.
- We arrive on Friday at 6:30PM LaGuardia airport, from there we have to go to Peekskill for a dinner
- From Peeskskill, we have to go to a hotel in Tarrytown probably late night (like after 9)
- Saturday from Tarrytown we go to Cortlandt Manor for a wedding
- From Cortlandt Manor to Peekskill Saturday afternoon/evening
- Again at night from Peekskill to Tarrytown
- Sunday morning probably brunch locally in Tarrytown, pick up someone in Peekskill and then head to LaGuardia airport.

We are completely unfamiliar with the area and will be driving there for the first time. Now my question is, will we be better off taking a rental car from LaGuardia airport, or will it be a lesser hassle to just use Uber? How is Uber service in that area? Is it available in nights like here in the Bay Area?

How is traffic? I am trying to judge how badly we will be affected if we say, miss an exit or something on the way from the airport because our flight arrives at 6:30 and we will already be late for the dinner. Do people there drive very aggressively?

How much of a hassle is rental car return at LGA? Is the rental car return close to the terminals?

Note: I am not looking for just a financial comparison, I am looking more at which option would be less hassle for this trip. I want to choose the option which will make this the most relaxed and hassle-free trip, even if it means paying more.

Your suggestions will really help me, thanks in advance.

Trust me friend, rental is the way to go in NYC. No cab, livery service, Taxi or Uber will be cheaper. You will have a nice drive to the peekskills and no doubt will hit some sort of traffic being it's 4th of July weekend and it's NY so traffic is everywhere.

I am in Queens and not too familiar with NY state so it's all I am able to offer in terms of advice.

Rent a car and enjoy the roads upstate NY has to offer. As already mentioned, traffic will be a hassle, especially since it's a holiday weekend. If you can, try driving on the Sprain/Taconic State Pkwy as the scenery is beautiful. If you have an extra hour to spare during your stay when it's light out, hit up RT 218 between West Point and Cornwall. You'll thank me later.

Definitely rental car.
If you were staying around Manhattan or Brooklyn then Uber would be ideal.

To avoid paying ridiculous tolls, go from LaGuardia to Long Island City and into Manhattan through Queensboro bridge. From there, stay on West Manhattan and drive on the Henry Hudson Parkway (9A)straight up to Peekskill.

But if you're really worried about time, then just take i-278 from LaGuardia to Henry Hudson parkway up to Peekskill. ( i just don't like paying annoying tolls)

Car rental from LaGuardia isn't that much of a hassle. Just hop on a Shuttle after you get your baggage and it will take you to your Rental car company.

Driving will be very aggressive but soon as you pass Bronx, things should calm down.

I live very close to Tarrytown (Croton on Hudson) and agree with everyone's suggestion. Get a rental car. Here's a breakdown of how long your drives will be (pending no traffic)

JFK - Peekskill 1.5 hours
Peekskill - Tarrytown 30min
Tarrytown - Cortland Manor - 30min

95% of your driving in Westchester will be on 9A. Nice roads but heavy on the police as many cars/bikes use 9A to head to Bear Mountain (amazing twisties). Keep it 5-10mph over and you should be fine.

Everything is a hassle in NYC but dropping the rental car off shouldn't be an issue.

I agree with everyone above, you'll definitely want a rental car. Your distances are too long to make Uber/Taxis viable and they'll end up costing an arm and a leg. Plus there are some really nice windy/tree covered roads that you'll get to explore as well.

Thanks, to everyone that replied. I will go with a rental car.

What tentative time can I give to arrive for dinner / late dinner at Peekskill, if we pick up the rental at LGA around 7PM (a regular Friday, not 4th of July). Around 8:30 sounds reasonable? Or closer to 9?

Rental Car 100%! Any cab you take will charge you at least 40-60 dollars just to leave the airport and drive you into the city. Make a reservation in advance and make sure to bargain with the rep at the airport. In most cases they will work with you on a better deal.

Side note* Make sure you load up on gum/water the flight/landing into LGA usually gives people clogged ears.
