Surely customs would have checked it out, even if it was in parts only form.

Having recently gone through this, I feel for you.

I was lucky enough to be able to ping my car with My BMW app and BMW NA was able to track and give local authorities the location. They had recovered it within 12 hours of it being stolen.

This is a very common thing in this part of the world, as OP said. Mercedes, Range Rover, BMW, Lexus... stolen and shipped to Africa. I'd wager customs never even saw it.

VICE did an interesting video on it a few years ago. The cars pop up in Africa wearing US license plates, and people just drive them around like it's nothing.

Must be the comfort access ones that are at high risk with the crims cloning the key with a receiver as owner walks away at a car park or even through a wall at a house unlocking car and just starting it with the ignition button.

Dunno. I know X5s are a huge target, and Porsche Cayennes. They said if you park a late model X5 in Newark and walk away, it's almost guaranteed to disappear.

A stout aftermarket steering lock would be a good deterrent.

Paging cmyx6go - if you are still having gremlins with your X6, I'm sure they wouldn't discriminate and probably take an X6 as quick as they would an X5 if you park it there. Insurance payout instead of lemon law.

Don't know much about Newark, waited at the airport there once for a flight connection.

A shop owner in Laval just outside Montreal once told me it's the same there. He said he'd lost a 911 parked in front of his shop during working hours while he and his team were inside working on cars.

I asked what the local and provincial police were doing about it. His take was they didn't really care. This was a few years ago and at a time when Montreal's Trudeau airport had the worst rate of airport parking lot car theft in the Western world.

The shop owner said the word was that the expensive cars were stolen to order, placed in containers shortly after being taken, and soon on their way to the Middle East.

I saw a clip about this in a documentary.

There’s a shop that receives orders for specific cars, the shop owner/manager then sends out his crew to find and bring back the car.

.... and puts it in a conex/shipping container, which pretty much defeats AirTags, LoJack, etc.

The container is loaded on a freighter (one of literally thousands of containers) and freighted across the pond.

Customs at the Third-World(-ish) palms are greased, the container is stamped as "inspected", and the next thing you know, the car has a new owner.

Money makes anything easy.

Sigh.
