I agree, I want the phone NOW

Lucky for me, 3G has been widely available around the Chicago area for a few years now.

Where's your store located if you don't mind me asking. I'm an ATT customer in Orlando.

After reading this: http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/patterson/23890 The prices don't seem to be as great as what Steve Jobs originally announced. It's still possible to get the prices he released, just after a CREDIT CHECK.

I think the pricing is fine. If you are new to AT&T, upgrade eligible, or a current iPhone user you get the $199/$299 price. Unless your credit sucks? Otherwise full retail: $399/$499 for the 8GB/16GB model. <--This is the same pricing as the 2G iPhone for months. I'm not sure why everyone is complaining?

Nothing shocking here. Current iPhone owners are very happy.

I wasn't trying to say it was "shocking" but that article sums it up perfectly.

Guess that $199 price Steve Jobs announced for the iPhone 3G should have come with a massive asterisk, huh?
They marketed the phone like ANYONE could get that price. Now it turns out maybe HALF of the people buying the phone will see those prices.

Not to mention the more expensive contracts, too.

I'm not saying it's the end of the world, I'm more than likely going to pick up a 3G after the hype dies down. I just think that it's funny how they're trying to market this phone as cheap.

There's the extra $240 every two years just from the plan price increase of $10/month.

The $18 "Upgrade Fee"

So after your two years of service that $200 iphone ended up costing closer to $500

This is why I don't agree with the article completely... Everyone else with a 3G phone has been paying $30+ /month for a long time. When I got my BlackJack I and then Blackjack 2, you we're required to have the PDA unlimited plan which was $39/month.

Then comes the iPhone & $20/month...it's a bargain. Ohh wait 2G speed. Not a bargain. At&t pushed edge's speed up slightly. Still not a bargin.

The new rate plan is simply inline with what everyone has been paying. Faster network, more money. After having a 3G smartphone and service, I will gladly pay for it. What does Verizon or Tmobile charge for unlimited data per month? They also require you sign a contract. The original iPhone required you to sign a contract.

I'll give you the "$18 Upgrade Fee" <-- That's crazy.

It would have been nice if at the keynote Steve had mentioned something about "with a contract", but injecting any negativity into his speeches regardless of how reasonable it may be isn't really his style. I think most people realize this and assumed that the $199/$299 price was the subsidized price. Just about every tech site on the web had made that prediction that same day.

And all the price calculations are nonsense. The $10 has nothing to do with making up the subsidized price. It's the normal cost for a 3G data plan at AT&T. Anyone who thought the new plan would be $60/month was smoking something. And the $18 fee is great because now instead of paying $175 to break my contract like I would if I were buying any other phone on the planet, I can just pay $18. Of course I'd like it to be $0, but this is a good thing, not a bad thing. The fact that they're going to let non-iPhone customers who are under contract upgrade for a reduced price too isn't bad either. Normally, contract people are stuck for up to 2 years.

It all comes down to whether you think it's worth it. I think it's great that they're trying to extend some discounts to existing customers and existing iPhone owners because usually existing people get screwed. I know they're not saints and they're just trying to make money and all that, but it's good for me and I think many others. The fact that everything Steve Jobs should always come with an asterisk is just about the most obvious thing someone could say.

Picked it up this morning!! waited in line at 8 AM, a friend hopped in line after a few hours, I came back at 1 PM and finally bought it at 3 PM...If I knew I was going to wait that long, I probably would have waited a few days to get it (they had some software snafus), but the phone is awesome! noticably lighter and more comfortable than the old phone, and the 3G makes for great web surfing!

So how many people actually got the upgrade price of $200/$300? Everyone who I know who was going to get the new phone had to pay the full price. Even though most of them already own the iPhone..

I got mine this morning White 16 gig. The apps and apps store are what make this phone. jm2c

3g is faster but not enough verses the edge to make this the only reason to upgrade.

GPS is fine.

PROS:
1. It works
2. google maps are nice

CONS:
1. No voice
2. No turn by turn
3. No re route
4. No ETA, Speed, Distance To

But as far as getting you where you want to be it will work fine. 3rd Party apps are going to fix this though so TOM TOM will be on soon.

Free Apps are really fun and you can put a ton on a 16gig

There is now a TV out w/widescreen too.

imho...worth it
