Kind of disappointing to hear the trial was not historically accurate, though I understand the reasoning. Still a powerful scene nonetheless. I'm pretty sure my neighbors in all directions could hear me yelling "FUCK THE STATE!!" when it came time for Legasov to tell the truth. (though not the first time they have heard me yell that )

I wonder how much is true of the story regarding Dyatlov and the other two scientists basically screwing everyone just in hopes of a promotion. I thought the actor who portrayed the head of the KGB was perfect in that role. That last interview with him and Legasov was fantastic.

I watched the last podcast pretty late last night. From what I recall, yes, the decisions made by the trio were based on advancing their careers.

When Legasov got lead into that room with tile walls, a stool in the middle, next to a drain in the floor...Oh man. My heart just sunk. Really fantastic acting by all in those last few scenes.

Great series overall, even if creative liberties were taken for the sake of wrapping it all up in 5 episodes.

Great episode. We've all been waiting for the scene in the control room, and I'm glad it was portrayed accurately.

I'm happy with the order that they showed things - starting out with the explosion and knowing nothing, since nobody there knew what was happening either

Finished the series yesterday - what an excellent show! I learned so much about Chernobyl, and now have a better understanding of the tragedy that occurred.

Something that trips me up about the finale.

The woman represents hundreds of scientists.

She wants him to tell the truth so the scientists there know the truth and will induce change in Russia's Nuclear industry.

She herself is a representation of all the scientists she wants him to inform.

Doesn't make any sense, zero.

Heck, I'm surprised they made radiation such a big deal in the show. At that time we barely knew anything about the effects of radiation on humans. Both the soviets and us here in the US were conducting atomic bomb tests and giving the observers a pair of glasses to help with the glare.

I'm surprised we don't make a movie about Fukushima which was handled very poorly by the Japanese and is a ticking nuclear bomb waiting to go offf. I don't know why the international community isn't trying to investigate, Japan has admitted they don't have a real plan.

"The new adaptation will portray the nuclear disaster as the work of a US CIA agent."

Oh, I’m sure liberties were taken in the explanation of what happened that fateful night. And there’s always going to be facts left open to interpretation; reasonable minds can differ. But I still enjoyed the show, and now have a better understanding of what caused the disaster.

Think you’ve already done that? Basically found fault with and criticized every aspect of the series in this thread? That’s certainly your prerogative to do so, but doesn’t detract from, or change the opinion of those of us who enjoyed watching Chernobyl. Candidly, your musings are neither compelling nor persuasive.

I expect that none of us (who like Chernobyl) take for granted that everything we saw is 100% accurate. The pod casts clearly reveal liberties and interpretations were taken in the production. But that does not mean the show is bad, or is 100% inaccurate, let alone should not be watched. Chernobyl told a story, and tried to shed light on the event. Clearly there was an explosion, and effects felt from the radiation. An entire town of 50,000 was evacuated overnight with its residents never to return. Thousands died. Chernobyl was more than just a “leak” and radiation exposure more than a routine x-ray.

For me, admittedly, I knew very little about the event before watching the series. Now, I have a better understanding of what led up to the reactor explosion.
Furthermore, there are independent sources, articles, books and news reports that generally corroborate the content of the HBO series. That’s good enough for me.
