I love Ferraris, but it's kind of a Walter Mitty fantasy thing with me; I could never afford one and anyway, they are too flamboyant for my taste.

Nevertheless, I'm drawn to them. I think my favorite would have to be the 2003 to 2010 2+2 model, the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti. Not the highest-performing Ferrari by any means, but an elegant grand tourer.

The Scaglietti's unit body is all aluminum and the front V-12 displaces 5.75 liters and puts out 533 hp. I suspect the rear seats are not really all that roomy, but who cares?

3,025 Scagliettis were made and all were manufactured with 6-speed transmissions. Only 199 were manual transmission cars; the others used Magnetti-Marelli automatic clutches -- quite similar to the BMW sequential manual gearboxes that were offered at the time. The basic gearbox is the same, and some enterprising individuals have converted autos to gated manuals.

Ferrari 2+2s, although expensive to buy new, do not hold their value as much as the more sporting cars. At one point, a used 612 Scaglietti could be had for as little as $80,000 or so. I've no idea what the current market is like; If I won the lottery, I might be tempted to investigate, but then I might be on intimate terms with an expensive Ferrari mechanic for years and years.

The Fiat 500 Topolino (little mouse) played a major role in getting the Italian auto industry back on its feet after the devastation of World War II. The Topolino was actually introduced pre-war in 1937 but it was in the late 1940s and 1950s that sales took off.

The 500 was tiny; it had a 569cc engine of 13 hp, the B model increased output to 16 hp. The max speed flat-out was about 85 km/hr. Over 500,000 500 Topolinos were sold until 1955, when the Fiat 600 replaced it.

This is a 1948 500B Topolino Cabriolet. While it included seating for just two, I'd bet cash-strapped Italian families managed to cram the whole family in for special occasions!

This posting in the vehicles thread hits pretty close to home for me, as my parents had a 1954 Ford wagon for several years. I *think* it was a four door, though; both two- and four-door models were offered, and I believe the two-doors were more popular (go figure.) Ours did not have the fancy roof rack or seat belts, of course.

I believe we did at least one coast-to-coast (Virginia to California) trip with parents, three kids and a large dog in the '54 Ford. No air conditioning or cruise control, of course. No interstate highways, either. It was definitely another era.

1965 Ferrari 275GTB 6C

The photoshoot of the yellow car did not have a shot of the engine so I had to go find another car to illustrate those gorgeous six Webers.

The 275GTB in either sohc or dohc form is among the most desirable Ferraris of all.

Lancia is not a household name on this side of the pond, but they have made some great cars.

Here's a 1936 Lanica Astura Cabriolet III Tip Bocca with custom bodywork by Pinin Farina.

A competition-oriented 1956 Jaguar XK-140MC. Not very suited for the street with those dual windscreens, and I think there is no top to put up just in case, thus the tonneau cover.

While Fiat is best known in the USA as a seller or small cars, their range in Italy has been considerable. In the early 1950s they manufactured a series of 2-liter V-8s known as the 8V. Here's a 1954 example.

A couple of cars I recently shot for Mecum.

The '57 is the most optioned '57 to ever leave the factory. The '78 Corvette has 30 miles on it, everything being bone stock, no restoration.

Carroll Shelby made a deal with Hertz resulting in the purchase of a thousand Shelby GT350 Mustangs in 1966. For $17 per day and 17 cents per mile you could rent a GT350H. Better budget for gas money, though.

Before the sensational Datsun 240Z, Datsun fired a shot across the bow of the European sports car manufacturers with the Fairlady convertibles. Initially available as a RHD Fairlady 1500, it soon became the LHD Fairlady 1600 and was quite competitive in the market. Here's a 1600.

(When the 240Z was introduced, it was known as the Fairlady Z in some markets.)
