Haha that is great!
Though I think that is steak and mushrooms, Salisbury didn’t look that good.
The aluminum did make something else from long ago pop to mind, jiffy-pop!

I used to eat these as a snack. I also like Tang better than orange juice for a while.

Apologies in advance for any earworms hatched.

You know you're old if you can sing or hum the theme from Gilligan's Island.

And for the record, I pick Mary Ann.

Speaking of gross things, this never became popular besides a saturday morning blitz campaign in the early 70s. But, my otherwise poor family chose to buy it on my request and although truly terrible I had to finish every bit of it. I think near the end before my parents came home from work my sister and I would scoop it up on a spoon and let the dogs eat it. They seemed to like it so much they took to standing by the pantry barking after we ran out.

If you are so inclined you can "re-indulge" yourself with the adult version

I always wanted a Yamaha moto bike in the mid seventies but they were way too expensive for my families budget. ($300 in1973 ~ $1,500 in 2020) Yeah, that was not going to happen on a NASA engineers budget so I got a Huffy instead.

I'm not sure if it was the first bicycle with a suspension but it was the first I ever saw.

I wanted one of those 'Krate bikes in the worst way when I was a kid. My folks bought us 10-speeds instead because we were well on our way to outgrowing the smaller bikes. I was pissed and hated the 10-speed, but like everything else my parents did, it was the right thing to do. Well, except for buying us figure skates instead of hockey skates. That was a bad move that didn't work out.

Wow, that's the first I've ever seen one of those.

That drum brake on the front was touchy as fuck. Between that and the shifter, I think it's pretty obvious why I never became a father.

Had many big wheels. Drove the wheels off as we used to love sliding them around and the plastic wheels would eventually grind away.

The 'Krate definitely had a high "cool factor" but riding it alongside anyone on a "normal" bike was like towing a grand piano. I think the purchase of the 'Krate when I was 9 years old was the last time my parents granted my wish and bought me what I wanted, to my great benefit in the long run.

By the time I was 11 or 12 I had set myself up in business as the ace neighborhood lawn kid/greenskeeper/snow removal go-to guy, and as a reseller of AMT and Pactra and Revell plastic scale models and supplies and Estes rocketry supplies. I grew epically lame weed on the south-facing bank of the river we lived on. Between all that and working for my parents maintaining and rehabbing their rental properties and maintaining and cleaning our cars, I was able to buy what I wanted.

One of the first purchases was a 12-speed bike (which were pretty new at that time in 1976), a Fuji S12-S, complete with gumwall tires, cloth handlebar tape, aluminum rims, Suntour derailleurs and a Belt racing saddle.

That bike was badass. Riding it, I felt like I'd grown wings. And buying and owning it was a fundamental awakening for me. Deliver value, and get value in exchange. Trade that value for something you want.

Do any kids work these days, ever? Has any kid in recent memory come home at 6 PM on a hot July evening, just in time for supper, dirty from head-to-toe with skinned-up knuckles and knees...and then gone back out so he could collect the $5 he was owed for mowing a lawn? Is there a single kid alive in the West who understands the idea of directly, personally producing and delivering concrete and tangible value as a means of having dignity and being independent? I pose these as questions, but I don't think I'm really ready for the answers.

Get off my lawn!

Yeah, and we'd spin the fuck out of that hard, slippery front wheel so that it wore through and there was a big gap all down the middle of it - which made it even more slippery.

Good purchase. The S12-S was the class of its price point (~$205~). My shop sold a ton of them (and the S10-S before it)...pride of possession, the ownership and use of quality equipment is incredibly rewarding.
