Wow, pretty high (good?) heart rate. I'm not sure my heart rate has ever gone much higher than the 130s-low 140s and I consider myself in pretty good shape. I generally do steady, moderately strenuous activity rather than bursts of high intensity.

When I started cycling and needed to set my heart rate zones, I used the standard formula of 220 minus my age and got 160 as the max heart rate. I found I easily exceeded that without trying too hard. On hills I'd regularly hit 180-190. So I used 190 as the max and just let the zones adjust from there. It's pretty accurate as I'm usually in Zone 3 for comfortable riding and Zone 4 if I'm pushing it, like I was on this ride. At my current age, using that formula my max HR would be 157. If I used that, virtually all my rides would put me in Zone 5 (Anaerobic) for the full ride. That just wouldn't be true.

I've been bad about keeping up my riding for about the past 6 months, so my HR was higher on this ride than it would have been a year ago for the same effort. So yeah, I'm slipping out of my previous level of fitness and need to halt that slide. I did an identical time on this Fulgaz ride back in February before I started slacking off. My HR was quite a bit lower. Fitness is an unforgiving boss. You need to keep at it or you lose it quickly.

Here is my HR from an easy ride tonight. 5/10ths effort. No heavy breathing and just spinning the legs. If I used the formula I mentioned before and set my max heart rate at 157, most of this ride would have been in Zone 4 with some in Zone 5. At that level you don't carry on a conversation because you're too busy sucking in air. That was not the case for this ride. I could easily have a conversation. That's why it's important to set your max heart rate as accurately as possible.

Picked up my first road bike and cheap trainer last week. Just wrapped up my first ever bike fit today. Did anyone else get sold heated treated insoles on the spot from a bike fitter? Or am I a sucker for shelling out $100 for a pair

Cold feet are not a problem for me but finger ends are a little tho' it doesn't bother me that much, a quick blow and rub on the hands for this ex-scout and he's off again

I use Bar Mitts for those rare times when I brave the cold to ride outside. But my feet getting cold is always a problem. I use toe caps, but I really should have some real winter protection for my feet.

I've seen those on m/bikes, no I don't cycle when it's that cold brrr

Been watching this vid that Holland style bikes are claimed to be better, must admit I had a bit of a chuckle watching it.
I've tried these types of bikes which are visibly based on a design going back to WW2 and before and found them unrideable on rough terrain, slow and cumbersome to change direction and quite frankly a death trap in certain situations.

These are nostalgia-based products, correct?

Mainly selling to those with memory, family history or other emotional connection to an intangible idea loosely related to the product?

Yes tradition plays a role I guess. What also comes to mind are those kind of bikes during the war and indeed now in France also with white painted ends on the mudguards and a big frenchman riding it with the ubiquitous french rolls and strands of garlic hanging out of the front handlebar mounted basket.

Took the new Domane+ LT out for its inaugural spin today. What a machine. The thing just powers through headwinds and up hills. You can still get a serious cardio workout, though. It's just too much fun blasting up hills.
