I like the photo, but the colors bother me a bit...I see a lot of brown?

you should see the 70-200 f2.8 IS L...I bought it earlier this year for 1428...(could be off a couple dollars, but within the 1400 marker)

That looks a bit better IMO. However, if the boats weren't there in the first place it would have been a great pix. Then again you were too far away and it's one of those moments where you don't have a lot of time to adjust for a better shot.

I almost pulled the trigger on the 2.8 IS.. but I got f4 IS instead, for only $1150 shipped! I figured I wont be using this for interior shots~ so I went for f4, which has excellent image quality too, if not better. Oh well~ I'm still waiting on the 35mm f1.4L MK2, which could come out any time now!!

Udub, lose the crop - you're filling your frame with a bunch of busyness and leaves the eye to wander aimless around a bunch of clutter.
with the boats and static people in the frame of your original, you create some nice tension for the imagination between calm static elements versus the frantic movement of the swimmers. /end two cents.

I still have the original and I sent a few copies of it out along with a few other pics. I liked that it had a foreground of some untouched water, then a subject (the swimmers) and then a background, the boats and foggy hills. |

well, it's not so much that it's a background/foreground thing - a lot of times, you really don't need these - it's the tension created between the opposing subject groups (what you're calling the 'swimmers' and the 'background').
hope that makes sense.

yeah it does. I wish the boats weren't there but there was no shot w/o them so oh well. I like it. Its not gonna end up on a postcard or anything but its decent.

seth, how about this...I can toy with the coloration to be different, but I cloned out the boats in the very back so you could see if you prefer the composition this way

thanks dood. I know thats kinda your style but it looks a little washed out to me personally. I am TERRIBLE with cloning out things so thats cool but now the background looks so empty without them there.

figured it was worth a shot to compare as for the colors, they can be altered in any which way

a friend at work is letting me use this for a bit. about as mechanical as it gets. Any tips? I just snapped off half a roll and kept instinctively looking at the back of the camera. i will never call my XT low-tech again

yea, i just got a 580ex II, thinking about getting this as my primary and using the 580 as the secondary or rim light. Reason for the panel for main is that it will help with focusing in the dark as it is continuous, no need for umbrellas either as it is a very smooth light, so don't have to worry about the stand falling down cause of wind.
