The car penetrating the barrier looked much like Francois Cevert's fatality at the 1973 USGP at Watkins Glen....it is just incredible how the safety of the car's survival cell has advanced over the years.

Romain even lost his boot in the crash. A Miracle that he wasn't knocked out by the impact.
In fact he got out of the cell himself. I doubt He would have survived had he been unconscious.

Worst accident I've seen in years. I was at Indy in 2017 and about 150 meters away when Bordais crashed into the wall at turn 3 breaking both of his legs. I could feel the heat flash when it occurred and the crash today was 10 times worse.

It was the fuel collector box that flared which is about 3 gallons of fuel. Had it been the entire cell he would have died.

The obvious question for the FIA is, how to prevent this level of impact at this location on-track.
An observation....the massive shunt occurred on a straight, but the barrier is angled at an appx 30 degree closing radius.

I presume the FIA will require the same deceleration barriers that currently exist at the usual-suspect runoff areas at this location.

From what I heard his fuel tank was completely ripped open ..
In the first sec. of the crash and explosion , I was convinced a driver died today..
I'm not religious , but it was a miracle !

Yes. And the fuel tank is actually a thick rubber bag located directly behind the survival cell.

1-MAX's pit stop was 5.2 sec. ?!?! As for RB that's a sea of time !
That's what the gap is now vs HAM !
MAX and RB lost it there...

2- HAM was driving "ridiculous slow" behind the safety car , while he was using DAS to keep his tyres warm .
Once the safety car went back in , MAX was running on cold tyres and HAM on warm tyres by using DAS !
HAM pulled away from MAX like MAX was standing still...DAS is awesome !

3- MAX back in the pit with 9 laps to go...Gap is now 23 sec. !

4- The race is already over with 6 laps to go ...
