S54's don't really eat bearings nearly as bad as S65 and S85. Regardless of the reliability, if you drive the two back-to-back as I did, it's night and day. VQ is a mediocre engine best suited for an SUV or truck. It's not even better than N52 in my opinion.

I have driven E46 M3s, love the car and character of the engine.

Although it's pretty ridiculous for what BMWs cost, they can't/won't make something that isn't so fragile.

That's like saying clamydia isn't as bad as aids , while both are sexual diseases no one would want
Yes the s65 is worst at destroying its own bearings , but that doesn't make the S54 bearing issues moot
It DOES go through bearings , but as it is a high performance engine that revs to the moon, some might deem it an acceptable trade off
I'm neither a fan of the VQ nor the S54
Both are gutless in the early 2000s era as I was driving 450+ awtq Evos on ethanol

VQ and S54 are both NA engines, with factory warranty and unmodified

What NA motor outside of the American big blocks feel chesty in any form...

Your 450awtq Evo on ethanol is a turbo engine, without warranty and modified

Wow, very comparable there...

I never said they were comparable
I stated a fact that they felt gutless to me since they made no tq
And you can't compare a good engine like a 4g63 to an s54

This sounds like a post on GRM where people complain about new car prices while comparing them to the price of a 12-year old Corvette.

I’m just going to say that it was very overrated in all iterations compared to the very best sporty engines. It felt like a bit of a truck engine to me in that it had decent torque down low but was never anything you wanted to take to redline. I owned a G35C w VQ35DE, so I’m not being anti Nissan here. I thought it was worse overall than the BMW M54 in the ZHP even though it was rated for more power. Even the best version pales in comparison to S54 which would still be a top notch engine if it were in a car today with appropriate weight, and that’s a 20 year old design too. I understand S54 is not impressive on paper necessarily anymore but it has a responsiveness that’s not found in most NA engines that are left outside of exotics and the GT versions of Porsche 9A1. Of course, S54 is heavy and wouldn’t pass emissions.
I can't speak to the DE but I just picked up a high mileage G35x with the HR. This engine is no joke. From 4k-6500 it pulls hard and redlines at 7600. Granted, it's not setting any speed records especially with the 3700+ curb weight but it's definitely a sleeper sedan. C&D tested it at 14 flat @100 almost 15 years ago. I like it so much that I'm getting a true cold air intake and Uprev dyno tune next month for starters.

VQ35HR was an awesome engine. Also was the best sounding iteration of the VQ in my opinion. I was able to get +25WHP from my Uprev tune with the cold air intakes and high flow cats. They also increased the redline to 8000 RPM and while it wasn't making much power that high, it sure sounded awesome It's useful for being able to rev to factory redline with no throttle cut in case you're not 100% on the money.

HFC are on the agenda. Those and the CAI are invisible from the outside which has the car flying under the radar so to speak...thinking I may want to keep it in sleeper mode and surprise the unsuspecting STI driver

As a previous owner of an HR 350Z and current owner of a "Stage 2" STI, you will definitely pull on them on the top end. Stock turbo has no pull after 5500 RPM, and the high RPM powerband of the HR with better gearing will be an easy win. Both my STI and 350z made 290 WHP, and the Z was noticeably faster above 60. I even beat a stage 2 STI back in my fast and furious days.

I just want to know the MSRP, standard features, and options for the Performance Trim level. That will let me know if I'm going to wait to get one when they are available or look for something else.
