because the S-system is medium format.
just as full frame 35mm-format cost much more than a crop sensor DSLR. huge differences. but Leica IS quite expensive - a very niche product. quality unsurpassed. the new M9 is bitchin'. but i wouldn't trade my D3's for it, because the only lenses i'd want to use for it, cost as much as the body itself, and more.

where did you guys learn how to do what you do? i.e. where did you learn proper techniques, how to use the hardware, what was what, how to process, etc? did you take a class, study photography extensively, just read a lot? its just that there is so much outstanding work on here and id like to find out how to improve

bill, honestly not sure about the nikon flash, perhaps rodi has some input? (ill look into it though!)
seth.. if you're going to be doing a lot of panning (not sure how far away youre going to be standing), you can set the IS to mode 2 (panning IS) and then set your cam to AI Servo so you can point at your target and pan with it and with the shutter half depressed itll continuously focus on the moving target. Works fantastic in my experience with that lens. depending on the weather, but assuming its going to be really nice outside, you can get some great results by taking a few steps back and going a little more wide open on the lens to get fantastic bokeh on some of the individuals (it will help if you have some ND filters). shoot in raw, because that will make the variety of white balance much easier to deal with since youre going to be shooting a variety of locations/situations, especially the water portion with glare on the lake. and use your hood (which I assume you will anyways...) that aside...have fun man, perhaps a meet next week?

bill, from what I can tell, with the D40, you would not be able to use the SB600 as a remote flash trigger, you would need the higher up model the sb-900 to be able to use the remote flash function since the D40 does not have i-TTL

I'm getting ready to purchase my first DSLR camera. I've taken some photo classes in the past, few years worth, but that was with the film type 35mm. Learned quite a bit, as well as how to develope and make prints. I've messed with our company Canon XSi quite a bit and even have taken it to some meets, but now I'm at the point where I want my own and start getting back into it. I went and held many different camera's, T1i, 50D, D5000 and the D90. As much as I love Canon, the Nikon D90 just felt so nice in my hand. I held the D5000 and the T1i and my hands felt cramped. I was considering the D40 because of the price, but others mentioned its near the same size as the D5000. I've decided on the D90 and figure I'll start with the kit lens 18-105mm VR. I was thinking of getting a prime lens 50mm f/1.8. Anything thing else I may want to look at for my first purchase? Suggestions?

^ It looks a little busy IMO but still a good pix. Honestly I wouldn't really know what to do to make that picture better (crop? zoom in closer? etc.). I would probably focus on 1-3 people instead but like I said I'm not really certain what I would have done.

I think it's the boats that killed it. Without them it would have been a great picture.
