SO its like bulk wine. They sell the same low grade garbage to hundreds of other wineries who may tweak it a little (or not), slap their own label on it and call it theirs! Is that about accurate?

MGP actually has a very good reputation and is found in very nice bottles.

That list of products earlier includes some pricey bottles and some very sought after products as well.

Exactly, some of the Mayor Pingree, Belle Meade and Magnus (as well as others) bottles go for stupid money on the secondary market.

I'm still chasing a decent deal on Magnus Cigar Blend.....

Doesn't change my point. Basically a low end "Cheap" brand potentially has the same base or even the same liquor period as a high end one. It all comes from the same batch and can be sold under a different label, blended with something else or whatever.

I never really knew they did that with booze like this. I only knew of it with wine

They don't sell any low end bourbons but there is definitely a mid and high level. I don't think you can buy any MGP produced bottles for under about $28 (their own Eight and Sand and still good). So retail ranges from about $28 to I think $200?. Nothing says you can't create some of the best products made and sell them to someone else for branding. Most of the time the higher priced MGP (or anyone's) product comes with longer aging. Guy who runs our bourbon club, his wife works for MGP and they aren't allowed to talk about who they sell to.

It doesn't all come from the same batch, or barrels, or warehouse, or recipe or aging.

I recently bought a New Riff 15 year bottle (MGP sourced) for $200 and traded it for roughly $650 (cash and bottles). Friend had the same bottle and decided to drink it. Some of the best bourbon I have ever had.

Thanks for explaining that...I wasn't going to persist in trying to change the other guys mind about cheap wine/ bourbon comparison....not worth my time. I like almost every MGP I have ever had and think they provide an incredible service to the small shops (And large) that need product to move!!!

Jeez I leave for a week and conversation goes off the rails.

MGP definitely does some really good stuff and some not so good stuff. Depends on who is picking what they are buying from them. There are a lot of ones not on the list posted (smokewagon and obtanium off the top of my head). Pretty much anything that says distilled in Indiana is MGP.

But it is about to all be mute anyhow. MGP bought Luxco so now they have their own distribution and are not selling off their product like they were before (my friend that sources for obtanium says the options are way way slimmer right now)

Anyhow... I've been enjoying a few bottles. Rare breed rye is fantastic.

Just a heads up for those that may not be aware. Tomorrow, May 15, is World Whiskey Day.
Plan to sit back with your bottle of choice , relax and enjoy. Cheers.

As long as you're still standing (or at least conscious ) for the main event it's all good.

Interesting that from my post this is all you disagree with. Thanks.

Low end is an opinion and come up with any price levels you want but you can buy lots of bottles for 1/3 to 1/2 the price of this one. Many think Eight and Sand is a good value in it's price range. I've had it when MGP gave our club a presentation but never purchased it. Doesn't change the fact that in the world of bourbon and rye's MGP is a respected producer and many of their great bottles are very good.

I think you are correct in the long term, they would rather produce and sell their own product, mainly because they are losing out on a lot of the profit, then the new companies that buy from them are often doing it until they produce their own product, then move on. They purchased the Remus brand in 2016 so it may take a lot of time until they are bottling everything they produce.

Had King's Family Distillery Ryeconic last night. MGP product 110 proof, aged at least 4 years. Given to me as a gift for watching a friends dog. Look up retail it is about $75 and while good I don't think it is worth the money.

Also received a Smoke Wagon through Fedex, also around $75 (plus shipping), also MGP, no age statement, 115 proof. Look forward to trying it.

Label pictures also attached, they are required to say where it is distilled, if Indiana but bottled somewhere else it is highly likely MGP's product. They can also buy aged MGP product and further age it themselves which allows them to change the label.

Remus is a label, Luxco owns Lux Row distillery and a bunch of other stuff. They now not only have the distilling, warehouses, packaging, marketing, etc to fully move to their own production. The Luxco purchase was WAY more than just a brand. Given they are already not giving as many options for people looking to source, I think something will happen sooner than later with this deal.

You will have to let me know how the Smoke Wagon UCUF is. I have only had the Small Batch, which I really enjoyed. Don't see much of that stuff around here.
