Thanks Dave.
Point Reyes if full of the sound of bulls bugling all over the place right now. Believe it or not, I have a heck of a time getting perfect focus on these guys and have to throw out a lot of shots. Just means I have to go back and try some more! |

I actually use single-point for these guys and move the AF-point around in the VF. Grasses can be a surprising problem. Also, if you get reasonably close, with a big lens, then the DOF is still pretty shallow. You need the point on the eye, not the rack. With big subjects, I try to be at f/8 when shooting the 500/f4. For big mammals, my defaults are ISO 800, f/8 and 1/1250-sec. and adjust to taste. Dave

I liked everything about my (previous) "iProduce" image except its softness and its too-shallow DOF. So I gave it another go.

^ I'm a fan of B&W images but I definitely like this color version of the pier more than the B&W one. I think the color shows more of what's going on in the scene.

Thx, Zing. Two different shots with two different purposes and completely different moods. I too like the color one better, but I am playing with B&W as an exercise in composition.

Do you shoot RAW or JPG? If jpg and you're not already doing so, try setting the camera to B&W and see what you think of the images. I don't know what it is about shooting in B&W but the images are almost always noticeably superior to desaturation in post.

I shoot both. I might be able to write jpeg in BW and RAW in color, but that just means the camera will apply the desaturation and probably some contrast, depending on the settings.

I have never ever been this close to a bobcat in the wild. It was my lucky day!

Congrats Ed. That is truly a special moment. Even more astounding is that you had perfect light and a perfect relaxed pose with great eye contact. Better buy a lottery ticket!
