Actually at DE (Drivers Ed) lectures the BMWCCA events are often described as the most fun you can have with your clothes on. Pre nannies, cars really felt more like extensions if your body than video games. Ford vs Ferrari touched on the man machine relationship when it was more visceral.

I get the romanticism and nostalgia of the old ads, but beyond owning a Bimmer of this vintage for the Sunday morning drive, I don't think I would want to daily drive a car this old which admittedly is crude in many levels and not necessarily paragons of safety by modern standards. Fun weekend/car show/project cars no doubt.

In my view F and G chassis seem to be far more reliable than preceding E chassis cars. And about BMWs being affordable... Not happening it is marketed as a desirable luxury brand.

In the case of my E70 X5, I would agree. Prone to issues.
But I’m delighted to say that my 2006 E 85 Z4 3.0si is as solid as they come. I’ll never sell it. |

Hoffman's H & E BMW dealership in Palo Alto, CA 1968is were I bought my first new BMW a 1600.
Sorry no photos but it was white with black interior. In those days we actually blinked headlights to other BMW cars on the roads. Fun times. I had an excellent buying experience with H&E because they let me test drive 3 times before buying it. Remember most dealerships were small and local family run. Service, I really enjoyed being able to do 90% of the work myself primarily oil changes and valve timing every 2000 miles.

What was the experience like buying a new BMW back in those days?

The E36 and E46 cars had their issues, but in retrospect, they were generally less expensive issues than the current generations, IMO. Once you get used to replacing radiators and coil packs, they're pretty easy.

BTW, I go back to the cars like the pre 70's models like the 2000 New Class sedan, my father's first BMW. Camshaft issues... even back then. Different era for the adverts, for sure. |

Don't even want to go back to the E39 days, even though the models were perhaps the pinnacle of quality and build. We have classic cars in my family. To be absolutely frank, to me they are not much more than mixed memories. |

Except the price of the 330i doubled and household income didn't...
