Looks like I'm in the distinct minority here but I like the overall planted aesthetic and isolation of the cabin. As others have mentioned though, triangles have to go.
Agreed

Eh... We have developed a pretty decent gestalt for this, i.e. 4-series renders. I personally like the side profile but am not a fan of the front or back. More so the front.
Each to their own remember 😉

I think it looks really bad actually compared to the current 2er Coupe

The rear defuser looks horrific as well as the absolutely pathetic door handles

Front looks like a Subaru BRZ, rear like an older Honda city

I dunno, I think this is an improvement over other models of late. The 2er has always been "just ok" from a design standpoint until the M treatment is applied. The "A" shape front fascia will really help the design. Almost looks like they started with that and then purposefully put a ridiculous front end on it to differentiate the M model further.

IF this render is at all accurate, it becomes apparent that the current crop of BMW designers have made some of the same mistakes they made on the 2 GC and the 4.

One of the mistakes I heard the former designer of the X5 mention was how the crease no longer goes through the doorhandles and we see that mistake in the 2 GC and this render as well.

This video goes over the mistakes in the 2 GC and mentions that as well as problems with the headlights, tail lights, and air scoops.

The guy who made that video is right on every point he makes about the 2GC and his 'corrections', which improve the looks significantly, underline just how bad that original design is.
The design teams at BMW have really lost the plot, imo. Several series worth skipping - 1, 2, 3 and 4 certainly - until the next generations.

Render work looks nice. The car looks like a joint venture project between BMW and scion.

His take on 4 series - and contrast that to a professional designer like Frank Stephenson who nailed why 4 series was bad (the front) is interesting to see. He likes 4 series but just moves headlights around - ok but would be cool to see how he tackles the grille.

There are some basics in car proportions we need respected overall. How A pillar extended needs to hit the ground at the center or behind the front wheel, not ahead (big problem for front drive car!). How C pillar rests on the rear wheel. How glass should be 1/3 and door height 2/3s for balanced profile. How cars height should be measured by 2-2.5x wheels in terms of height. How car companies use tricks like wrap around headlights to shorten visually the overhang on front (Audi does this a lot!). Etc etc etc. Instead the guy just moves shoulder lines and shrinks headlights but I see not much original, so kind of wasted opportunity but may be he gets better.

BTW, Mercedes A Class sedan had a terrible look to it when it came out. For new generation they fixed all those issues I mentioned above and car is way more resolved. Alternatively, VW Golf 5, where the guy made it with tiny wheels, big glass house, roomy, comfy - as design it was crap and sold poorly and designers was fired and they redesigned that hatchback from 6 onwards and it looked better since.

Overall modern car designs are bad for most part, they age very fast, too fussy, too agressive, too big badges, cars are heavy, wheels are 21 inch on 911 (are you kidding me!), etc.

Here is a video about good design of cars with Gordon Murray commenting all throughout whats wrong with modern car design:

Frank Stephenson on 4 (he made second Mini, Fiat 500, F430 Ferrari, X5 E53, etc so his opinion is significant on the 4 series):

After studying the front end further, I think it's the head lights that are the real problem. They're just too small and lateral- not to mention single. I know the 2002 had single lights but they were clearly better proportioned. Looks a bit like fetal alcohol syndrome to me.

Cleverly done BMW. You make the 2 way worst than the 4, and so people forget the poor design on the G22.

Yeah I didn't see the point of including Frank's video because I think readers of this forum have all see it. And granted, one would expect a professional designer to have a better critique. I'd be very interested in seeing what he might have to say once we see the actual 2.

I think the point is that even some amateur / guy on YouTube is able to point out the pretty obvious problems with the 2 GC and make some reasonable suggestions for change that arguably look better. Perhaps not as good as it could ... but most folks would say better.

Since it looks like the new 2 coupe will be taking a lot of design elements from the 2 GC, seemed like a relevant reference point.

For being the regular 2 series coupe, its not that bad looking. The grill design is more conservative than the G8x's, which I favor.

Wish they went more traditional with the back end though. If you didn't see the rear badge, you wouldn't guess that it was a BMW at all. The styling more closely resembles the back of the Mercedes A-class.

But overall, I see promise. I can picture the M version looking great with the more aggressive styling and hopefully the S58 engine under the hood

I admit that I have obsessed over these renders all day, because all indications are that they are pretty darn close the final product. I am still interested is the final conclusion on the day.

head lights and tail lights aren't the best, but I could definitely live with it, unlike the current gen M2 rear arches and butt.
