A promise ring is really just a way for couples to 'attach' themselves by a material object. Whether you know it or not, when things start to get bad, and you know you cannot marry the person or be with them any longer, that promise ring will be there to remind you the money and time you spent buying it. Bad idea in any case IMO. An engagement ring is appropriate because you have already taken the plunge at that point.

Don't take your freedom away like that before even getting engaged, because it could end up coercing you to a decision that you will regret later.
