What I learned. Don’t buy alpinas. Or at least not ones with with one off engines.
And for gods sake don’t use a machinist who isn’t close enough for you to walk in and inspect in progress.

I don't think a visual progress check would have helped here. And as a sort of ex-machinist I certainly wouldn't appreciate an unannounced visit - got to concentrate!

Our building is locked, most machinist/cnc facilities require key fob entry for I9 background checks. Just finished getting mine done again after I moved shops. Sleeving a block is not unheard of, I had to do that with it a 2.5L S14 block and as some know now that BMW NA will and does not sell EU parts unless you have a ROW/EU VIN.
What is good is the Machinist that did the work is owning up to bungling it and making it right. Entertaining how the drunk showed up, glad he left that in. |

Hmm, iron sleeves in an aluminum block, and just ~40 miles in a couple of them are oval-shaped? Dude who did the work claims he's been doing it for a decade and "knows what he's doing". Seems like a bad idea even if the guy has done it successfully in the past.
Now he's going with the used motor from Poland in the B7. That would have been a better plan from the get-go. Will be fun to see how this plays out in the end.

Got onto M539 after seeing this thread. Without exaggeration the best YouTube channel I have seen, personally. Sreten is a lighthearted and talented guy, really inspiring too. Almost watched all the videos! Hope he keeps it going long into the future, can't get enough.

Sreten’s video editing is top notch and his lighting is really good in such tight spaces. Great sense of humor as well. His 50-60 minute videos fly by!

But...he needs to use the BMW pistons because the alpina ones are on 92mm for a 92.03 bore. Where the BMW ones are 91.96mm. Otherwise he's setting up for the same outcome as buying a new alpina block (albeit a lot cheaper). I know that means he'd need to machine the crown of the BMW pistons to get the compression ratio good.
Or did I misunderstand the measurements? |

Great 65 minute video today! I marvel at how he can keep everything orderly and all parts accounted for. Hell, I inevitably misplace one nut or bolt whenever I have to keep track of only 10! I’d love to know what his actual “work time” is for today’s video.
