My brother has a 2015 APR stage 2 MT GTI and that thing is fun to drive. Its surprisingly quick and very torquey. He had to upgrade his clutch early on because the stock unit could not handle the power. His 3rd gear is no joke on the highway. Even with better tires it just spins the front wheels with ease once boost hits.

I felt like the stock clutch was going on my 2008.5 after only about 20k miles with no mods at all. Definitely a weak point but an easy fix.

Heck even their power on paper is not bad, but not great as well.......
Drive one and you'll see. Here in the states, we can get them for around $25K nicely equipped. When I price up a 328 with the options I'd want, it costs close to $50K, so twice the price. In the end, the 328 just isn't worth twice the price.

The Golf R is a bit more money - can be had for $36K or so. Slight modifications will really wake the little car up and turn it into a giant slayer for sure. You will literally have M3/4 speed again, for half the price. So in this sense, it's much more accessible to people.

They really are a great package overall. I thought I was going to get a new M3 when I was in the market for a new car, but just couldn't justify laying out $65K for a car. I still race BMW's and the wife still has the X3, but I'm really loving my little GTI. Nice, light weight, comfortable, fun and usable. It is a complete package that I'm not embarrassed to get out of at a client.

This is a GTI with a Golf R turbo vs. a Dinan Tuned M4:

The DSG is utter shite

It needs to be kicked hard before it does anything

Its worse than a traditional slush box in terms of responsiveness

I test drove a Golf TDI with a DSG and thought it was pretty cool. That was until I heard the maintenance and was like lolno.

Likewise...I leased an e Golf for $84/mo so my M2 can rest during the working week....put some BBS wheels and proper tires on the eGolf and voila!....actually quicker to 35mph than the GTI!

Hey meow ... I had the 6 MT in my 2013 MK6 GTI and freakin loved it. But this time around on my MK7 I went with the DSG, and can not say much ill about it.

Occasional rolling speed jerkiness aside, the shifts come very quick. The paddle shifters are refreshingly responsive (both +/-). Transmission comfort and sport modes seem to be tuned very appropriately. The sport mode down shifts in turn ins, hold gears and RPM's when I need it to and makes the whole experience a very positive one for my first "automatic transmission".

I might even want to try the DCT on my next M.

You have to drive one, that's all.

PS: A defeatable stability control is not really something anyone considers when shopping for a daily.

Lol!!! Who's paying $49k for an R? I'm almost certain that would be illegal in some states.

$36k sounds about right.

Ended up buying a 2017 4 door GTI, pretty much a base model, with 6MT.

Picking it up on Saturday...good peace of mind with the full warranty, in case any reliability issues surface. GTI has always been on my bucket list of cars I have wanted to own.

Congrats man!!! When I bought my second business a few months ago I had to sell my f80 as my commuting miles just about doubled. I felt silly keeping the M3 as I was no longer driving it.

Having owned an 13' MK6 GTI in the past, it wa sonly natural for me to buy another GTI. I jumped on an MK7 last year and love it! I probably shouldn't tell you how much I paid for it though.

I cross shopped the WRX as well. It's an amazing package. I was leaning towards an auto for this car (high miles, traffic) and just couldn't stand the idea of a CVT. But otherwise, the WRX is such a compelling car. Maybe a little loud too for DD purposes, but if you can live with that, the reviews are spectacular!

Did you end up with the WRX?
