When I was a kid, there was a certain Coca Cola machine at the local airport where the so-called “Coin Return” lever did not work.

I was on Carson once… sort of. March of ‘87 a bunch of my college buddies and I went to see it taped. Tim Conway was the main guest, and he was funny as you can imagine. Anyway, right when Johnny would come out the applause sign would light and the crowd cheered like crazy, then it would go out and folks were supposed to hush up. I didn’t, and let out a loud and long woooooooooo! I made the edit!!

My old man bought a vintage Piper J4 in 1968, restored it, and lost it two years later when a wind storm ripped the tie-down anchors out of the ground. The airport took responsibility, and gave him a two year old 150 to replace it.

I never got to fly in that rag-covered kite, but did fly (both noun and verb) the 150 when I was young.

Funny thing is that I still remember the tail number for the J4, and the FAA registration database says that someone rebuilt it again and flew it into the late 1980's.....

I’ll try to dig up a picture. The airplane is a PA-22 Tri-pacer.

My dad’s first airplane was a 1939 Porterfield Collgiate with a 65 HP Franklin
engine. I remember flying in it. I got out dad’s logbooks the other day and
looked up the N-number and was very pleased to learn the airplane still exists.
It is in a museum, safe and sound.
