EVs still have major quality problems, and it’s mostly about the software
Jun 28, 2024
JD Power’s latest quality study is out, and it’s not looking good for EVs. And in some ways, it’s not a surprise. Like in past versions of the survey, battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles performed worse than their gas equivalents in just about every repair category measured by JD Power.
JD Power measures quality based on reported problems per 100 vehicles of a particular brand. According to the survey, people who own internal combustion vehicles reported having 180 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), while EV buyers have 266 PP100.
“Owners of cutting edge, tech-filled BEVs and PHEVs are experiencing problems that are of a severity level high enough for them to take their new vehicle into the dealership at a rate three times higher than that of gas-powered vehicle owners,” Frank Hanley, senior director of auto bench marking at JD Power, said in a statement.

But most of the grousing seems to be about tech, a major concern given that the auto industry is haphazardly racing to cram as much software into their models as possible. JD Power has logged this problem before, and it seems to be exacerbating.

Until consumers concentrate on reliability, value and dependability and not innovation this trend will continue. It's a car not a video game or an extension of your phone. The ICE folks don't have anything to be proud of in these numbers. Like being the skinny kid at fat camp.

Not an Audi guy but that position is surprising. I guess so is Chevrolet.

Three out of four EV charging developers say they can’t get enough electricity for their stations
June 30, 2024
Of the 211 developers surveyed by Xendee, a California-based software company, 75% said that electric grid limitations are among the biggest roadblock to building EV charging infrastructure. The total cost of the infrastructure was a problem for 63% of the respondents, and permitting delays were cited by 53% of those surveyed.
Many of Xendee’s clients, according to Utility Dive, have resorted to installing gas- or diesel- powered generators to run their charging stations.

I think it’s clear from the first sentence it’s just an informational little news story post. No overarching comments were made.

Just off the top of my head it seems BMW has moved down quite a bit from where they have been lately. Am I wrong? Could it be due to problems with their EV fleet? I don’t know. I’m just wondering out loud.

I looked at this for a while and the only conclusion I could come up with is reliability is more related to corporate direction. Dodge has almost no EV exposure but they obviously suck at keeping their customers happy?
Kia has a significant mix of EV's vs ICE but they are doing arguably better?

One of the weaknesses of having a jury of your peers is that the vast majority of them have done something similar to this at some point and have the attitude of “there but for the grace of God there go I” and they only hand down a slap on the wrist. If I’m ever the victim in a situation similar to this I’m going to push for a jury filled with teetotalers.

If we get full self driving then hopefully accident rates will drop tremendously.

Depending on what gets struck by the projectile you might wind up needing full self driving.

Completely agree with that. We have come a long way since the original DARPA self driving challenge and I remain optimistic that this tech will continue to improve.

And now the rest of the story!
BMW Doesn't Want Cars Burned In Car Carrier To Go Up For Sale
07/02/2024
The car carrier MV Fremantle Highway went up in flames in the North Sea last year, consuming thousands of brand new Mercedes, BMWs and Minis. Some of the cars on board were in good enough condition to be salvaged, reconditioned and sold, but BMW doesn’t seem to want anyone to buy those cars.
Surprisingly, around a quarter of the 3,857 cars aboard were described as undamaged in Maritime Executive. A quarter of their number—260 BMWs to be precise—would be sold off by a Taiwanese insurance company, and their buyer would then resell the lot to a group of Dutch speculators according to The Northern Times. The Dutch group reportedly claims the cars are in good condition, having only gathered soot in the fire, and seeks to resell the salvaged vehicles. But BMW is having none of it.
The automaker reportedly filed a preliminary injunction in Dutch courts last December, claiming concerns over the cars’ safety and the risk of reputational damage if the cars are allowed to be sold. A company lawyer reportedly said that the cars were written off by insurance as a “total loss” and that they have damaged structural metal, wiring, and paint. They also reportedly claim that other intact vehicles salvaged from the ship, notably Audis and Mercedes-Benzes, were recycled rather than resold due to their condition.

It was liquid Hummingbird food, but enough that it should have extinguished the fire on the onset.

I have so many effing Hummingbirds I'm going broke.

I gotta go with Ford. Considering the reputation Ford has gained in the past recent years with recalls (and the publicity with Bronco's hard top), it being in between Lexus and Honda, WOW!

The best thing I saw the DOT do was a "safety car" in the late 1970's where the front structure (fender wells) were injected with energy-absorbing polystyrene foam. IIRC it was a Pinto (yeah, I know...), maybe a Vega, that the DOT crashed into a Cadillac (head-on collision). The slow-motion replay of the crash showed the foam-filled car crumple up then spring back to shape as the energy dissipated from the foam.

I Googled it and can't find any reference to it.
