Little different topic here, but one of importance non-the-less.

I'm sure law enforcement and first responders see a lot the same issues with PTS, TBI, physical injuries as the military does. Do you have specific systems or facilities that focus on these fields? The military has the VA, and while it's widely regarded as not-so-great, it has been getting better and they are starting to look more into unconventional, holisitic, and psychedelic treatments.

I listen to a lot of military podcasts, and almost all of them have stories of guys leaving traditional medicine and trying other methods, and those seem to be working very well. If you're interested in a great podcast about injury and recovery, The Medevac Podcast is great.

Most modern larger police departments (fire and EMS as well) have lots of support for members suffering with PTSD or other job related injuries, EFAP (Employee & Family Assistance Program) is available to all members and their families, it is outsourced, confidential and free. I know there are a number of volunteer organizations as well that are available to all first responders and military in Canada that are funded through donations and are managed by former first responders and military personnel. This is one that I'm familiar with and knowing some of the folks involved I suspect they'd pick up the phone and talk to anyone who needed help from outside of Canada or have contact information that would be available to others.

That arrest was delicious. The kids crying in the back... so sad - not the first or last time they see mom and dad behaving this way.

That said, good Lord, the police (in general, and here specifically) have so much restraint. I couldn't even play that without skipping forward because I was being aggravated, lol.

Our local force (~28) doesn't have anything within the organization outside of mentor, on-on-one support. The City does provide EAP to all employees.

Officers can get their direct support from an agency of the County. Apparently just made sense to have it done there, orders of magnitude, etc.

There are also chaplains who travel from department to department as needed. "Chappy" was in the hospital and escorted my mom from her room to the morgue. That was the most comforting thing that happened that morning, knowing she wouldn't be alone going down there.

And a prime example of karma: I had always helped him out with the parish computers, at most let him buy me a sammich for doing it.

My partners in this thread have already offered some insight. As it pertains to my department specifically, we have a Psychological Services Bureau that offers various methods of intervention and assistance. Culturally, however, people/personnel still feel apprehensive about reaching out in fear of adverse affects to their employment; only seeking assistance after the situation becomes so bad that termination is on the table (…which is the very thing they were trying to avoid in the first place).

So sad. I just read there were 4 suicides in the LA County Sheriffs Dept in 24 hours. I imagine this hits really close to home for Sedan. So sorry for your loss.

Rest in Peace.

Did you watch Gloria Allred parade her latest whales around? Something about you police depriving them of their constitutional rights, because you don't tell them every possible recourse as a victim. Related to the whacko in the Tesla that was beating cars. The victims weren't invited to give their statement at sentencing, and the PD/DA didn't tell them they could file a civil suit to recover real/perceived damages.

The one lady has anxiety attacks now if she leaves the house, yet she is on the LA news, full name and city of residence plastered below her during her press conference.

I still wonder how Gloria and her ilk sleep at night

People want to play the victim any chance they get. Any adult knows that when it comes to legal ramifications, the options are either criminal, civil or both. Police officers don’t really deal with civil issues; it’s outside our scope of enforcement. Civil issues are handled through the court system, so Mrs. Anxiety Attack needs to address her issues accordingly.

I envision a <shudders uncontrollably> future where you are required to Mirandize the assailant, then read off a list of "constitutional" rights to the victim. Probably a hand-out with it all spelled out, a phone number to call, and an appointment to see someone from the court.

My brother was killed 15 years ago by a DUI driver in Lakewood, CO. The driver blew a .32 five hours after hitting him and drew a six-year sentence in the state penitentiary.

While my brother's daughter, her mother, and I were preparing for the service to honor his life, the pastor mentioned that he'd been an LASD pastor until sometime recently. I asked him about that, and he said that it wasn't a job (for him, at least) that you could do indefinitely. It took only a few words for him to express how difficult it was for him as a pastor, and, more importantly, for those he was serving.

As I recall it, yes. It was in 2009 that I met him, and I believe he had left the department fairly recently.

P.S. I realize I should have id'd him as a 'chaplain' and not as a 'pastor'. (I'm not very conversant with the different religious leaders' titles and roles.)

I have encountered a sovereign citizen on one occasion in Long Beach and it didn’t work out too well for him.
