Thoughts on this from this morning on my drive into work? File a complaint or let it go?

File a complaint for what? I watched the video and I assume your issue was the lane change the officer made. At most a very minor moving violation and likely has a reason that you may not be aware of.

Seriously. Not sure if OP's issue is with the officer changing lanes in front of him, or the Tesla in the second clip. If I were either driver in the right lane, I would have hung back and given the officer room to change lanes. The left lane hoggers were oblivious to him being there.

Thank you for your reply sir. Yes, my issue is: not signaling to move over, not a safe distance to get in front of me, same holds true for when he got back into the left lane. While it may not be a "huge" issue per say in light of that officers daily tasks...I do not find it proper. Nor did he have his lights/siren on or sped away quickly indicating he was enroute to an event. So not sure what other reason he/she might have had for those events to take place.

My concern is with the Officer. Why would you have dropped back...his lights nor siren was on. If that was the case, yes I would have. But other than that fact...the officer shall follow all driving laws...no?

Lights and sirens can and usually are used at the officers discretion. There were numerous times I wouldn't use them. It is possible the officer was trying to close the distance to a car ahead and didn't want to alert that driver to his presence, it is possible he was responding to a call that didn't necessitate lights and sirens, it is possible he was trying to move close to an area as an event was unfolding that didn't require his/her immediate attention but wanted to be close just in case. It is also possible that it was just some sloppy driving (it happens). When I was working if I saw someone make that lane change I likely wouldn't have stopped them, maybe held back to watch to see if there was an issue.

I would have hung back anticipating the officer's move. You can see him coming up on a slower moving vehicle in the left lane and as he closes the gap and starts to speed up, you're closing in on him. I also try to make it a point not to pass a police car.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, just stating what I would have done.

No worries. Law Enforcement is a bizarre world to work in, things are often not as they seem and the way most people look at the world and their day to day activities don't always jive with what you might see LEO doing.

The view seems to have a bit of a fisheye effect, so the distances are pretty distorted. I have a bigger problem with the panic slowdown of the Tesla. he obviously doesn't grasp time & distance. The officer was pulling away from him when he changed lanes. The Tesla couldn't catch him with, what we joked about at work, a catching stick. I guess that could've been Tesla's autopilot panicking.

I was thinking he should've pulled the schmuck for dawdling in the left lane...

I hate when people do that, but the reality is it almost never gets enforced.

You’re making a lot of assumptions. You have to remember that we have a dispatch radio, local tactical radio channels and a mobile computer in the car providing us information you are unaware of. You have no idea what was going on and/or what that officer was responding to (….nor any tactical considerations). What you’re doing is akin to observing two people having a conversation and assuming what that conversation is about without hearing a single word being uttered.

I have a California gun question. Sorry if its been asked. If I want to take my pistol to the range for practice. It was my understanding that I need to have the gun unloaded in a locked box/bag in my trunk with the mag out next to it.

My local gun shop told me that I did NOT have to have the pistol locked in a box. That it just needed to be unloaded in a box or bag in my trunk with the magazine out. His argument was, the truck is a lock.

I plan to just use a lock regardless. But are they right or wrong? Does the firearm need to be in a locked box or is the truck lock enough?

Technically it needs to be in a locked case, but no officer is going to split hairs like that. The firearm can even be in the car with you, albeit not on your person unless you have a CCW, as long as it’s in the locked case and as long as the ammo is in the trunk (…or substantially separated as to not be available for immediate offensive or defensive use).

I'm sure you are correct about the law in CA so no dispute there. What I will say is those are BS laws. And one of the reasons I am SOOOOOOO happy I live in Arizona.
