True. Probably wouldn't hang with a base C8 either.

Side note: Silly me didn't realize a $60k base Cayman isn't a wish. They start at $58,150.
(Cayman S base is $69,300)

Edit: when I try and equip a base Cayman to base C8 specifications, I get to around $65k. However this price doesn't include Porsche's torque vectoring and mechanical LSD even though a base C8 has a mechanical LSD. I'm not sure a base Cayman doesn't have LSD stock and the option really only adds torque vectoring. Also adding this option on the Cayman requires the 10mm lower suspension and becomes a an option package that is over $3000.

Anyway, I know nothing about Vetts, are they reliable? I keep hearing lots of people and mechanics saying that GM products are not the same anymore and most cars are nowhere near Japanese or even German reliability

I can honestly say that out of the 6+ Corvettes I have had, none have gave me issues whatsoever even with me beating the shit out of them.

Only had one issue. Years ago I had a 1999 Fixed Roof Coupe which was the predecessor to the Z06. I just liked the design better with the flat back glass.

But the problem was my fault. I installed Heads, Cams, and a ported FAST intake and custom dyno tune. Car come out of that at 460/460 plus at the rear wheels. Didn't give much thought to supporting mods and put a sticky tire on it at the track and broke a half-shaft.

That one was on me. However I seen plenty of vettes with 150K miles and more making passes.

In fact the biggest problem I've seen were from people not driving them enough. Once the battery gets low, wonky things start happening.

As far as repairs go.....these cars are extremely easy to work on yourself....even tune if you take time. And you can get parts at a decent price.

Most of my wrenching has been on performance upgrades.

C8 only $1,005 more than a 1LT Auto C7. C8 msrp is $59,995 which includes $1,095 dest fee. Z51 package still only $5,000 like the C7. Bargain.

1LT DCT C8 msrp - $59,995

1LT Auto C7 msrp - $58,990

Makes sense, as a C7 Stingray with 3LT, Z51 and a slushbox is $73,735.

It's so hard to wrap my head around GM pricing.

I bought my C7 Grand Sport for $65,000. New, off the showroom floor with 20 miles on it, never been titled or registered. Sure, there's been a moderate amount of time that passed between the time it left the factory to when it came home to ME, it was fully within my expectation of what a fully loaded Corvette Grand Sport should cost (it had every option ticked on the build list except automatic transmission and a couple of the appearance package items. MSRP was $88K).

I've NEVER paid MSRP for any car in my life except the MZ4 Coupe. Heck I don't even recall paying published INVOICE price for any car in the last 20 years. So I fully do not expect to pay $73K for a C8 Stingray with 2LT and Z51 package. I suspect, within 2 years, that same car could be had off the dealership lot for less than $60K. The sweet spot for any non-ZR1 Corvette is between 18-25% off of MSRP.

There'll be early adapters and Corvette enthusiasts that WILL pay full MSRP and then some. In fact I suspect the next 12-24 months most Corvettes will be sold at MSRP or better. But GM's motto has always been to build them, build MORE of them, and build MORE of them FAST and let the dealership network take the brunt of it. If what some of the speculations are true, that the first few years they're expecting 50,000* units per year to be built, by early 2021 there'll be a glut of 2020 and early 2021 models stockpiling on the dealership floor.

And at that point with the impending release of the Z06 variant, price pressure and inventory glut there'll be massive, $10,000+ trunk cash to be had (like I did with the Grand Sport).

*There's not 50,000 sales to be had in this segment. Believe me.

Exactly, and that's in perfect economic conditions. We're ripe for a pretty large correction/recession here as well, 50k would be an absolute impossibility then.

AND I love GM for doing it.

Case in point...

I paid 73k for my M3, which was a big disappointment.

I paid $47k for my 2 SS 1LE. DEAL OF THE CENTURY!!! You spend some seat time in it and put it through its paces, and it's easily the cost of the M3.

Who doesn't want to pay less for me and feel they got a great value for their money.

GM please keep whoring them out and discounting the shit out of them.

C8 Grand Sport, see you in 3 years

My personal "base price" is officially $77,180 MSRP. This build is a 2LT coupe + Z51 & FE4 performance options; with GT2 seats and the lift system. I consider all must have options; especially the FE4 add-on to the Z51 package. Likely I'd add some appearance options, but the above are what I'm unwilling to do without.

I’m really not interested in the Z51. I drive spiritedly but not on a track. For me Z51 is just bragging rights. I will get 2LT, NPP, black wheels and red seat belts. I think that’s about $69,880. The non-Z51 has a higher top speed if you want to talk yourself out of spending an additional $5k. They took cues from Porsche in how they packaged or offered things ala cart. Not as badly as Porsche though.

I'm sure the new C8 won't need it, but in my C6 and any other corvette I've had it was a plus. Different gearing between the first few gears, more aggressive spring rate, and felt way more planted than the base or magnetic ride options.

Plus all the cars I've sold were to people looking for that specific option allowing me to recoup a little more money.

This is an interesting post. On one hand you say, the Z51 package is "just bragging rights." Then go on to say, the non-Z51 has a higher top speed, as if that's not just bragging rights?

It's like an 8-9 mph difference and it comes down to aero and gearing.

It might be about bragging rights, I think it may also have something to do with making your car unique. A common view held about the C8 seems to be that given the performance vs price, ie bang for the buck there are going to be a lot of these things around. The downside I see to them is they will be somewhat common to see as opposed to the cars that they would compete with in performance.

When you think about the base model and it's specs/performance numbers compared to what was available only a few short years ago it's lightyears ahead of what we had available. The thing is in hypercar territory of a few years ago, and frankly well beyond what 99% of the population could possibly drive to the limit. I have a friend who has a very nicely kitted out C7, he has had the same driver training that I have had and he has said it's way more car than he can drive to the limit.

Interesting times really. Would I have one, maybe. I hope to get a look at one and maybe a test drive, but one of the things I love about my 993 is it's uniqueness. There are lots of cars that are way faster, but I could likely keep with them if pressed but that's just not my thing anymore. A bit of time on a twisty road is good for me.
