Lady Jane, the Irish theme of your post reminds me of a trip to Ireland we did c. 2000 (still on the theme of metric and imperial). At that time car speedo’s in Ireland were in miles and miles per hour, all the old roads signs were in miles and miles per hour, however, new stretches of road that had been funded by EU money were in km, but neither old or new had the unit of measure on. Driving from Waterford to Cork was a nightmare, as it appeared to be getting further away as the signs flipped between miles and km, as we flipped between single carriageway roads to big wide roads (in the middle of nowhere) - but they were very good at telling you that the road had been funded by the EU.

It is all sorted now though, all distance signs are in km, speeds are in km and new cars have km on the Speedo by default. I love driving in Ireland.

I worked for an Irish company and flew a few times a month from UK to Cork and then picked up a hire car and drove to Mitchelstown a distance of about 30 miles or was that Kilometres !! so I know exactly what you mean

THis country my man, is so fucking confused. Cannot figure out if it is British or American. The worst is the date format(s). The Americans do it wrong (like everything they do) but at least they are CONSITENTLY wrong, Canada it could be any of the three formats. Fucking lunacy.

Agree- I provide support to our U.S. subsidiary, and dates are a real pain, especially when it is <13th of the month.

I now have them standardised on DDMMMYY, so today being 13MAR23 - seems to work really well, and no confusion.

We also get caught out when we put the clocks back in Winter and forward in Spring, as the US and Europe change on different dates! Argh!
