BMW is nothing like Apple. While I feel BMW's I-Drive issues are overstated, the interface isn't near anything like what Apple would create in terms of user friendliness.

are you saying the apple is more user friendly? the iDrive is one of the worst HCI devices ever created (maybe after check-out machines at Albertsons)

So did you buy a BMW for the idrive or because it drives the way a car should , as a Mac works like a computer should.

It kind of like saying the G35 is better then a 335i because it has better entertainment system and gadgets.

So a BMW user interface is better, its called the steering wheel and gas peddle.

man im getting sick of my screen now!! just coz my screen name says G35 it doesnt mean i am comparing bimmer to G35:mad::mad:

anyways, dont mix things together. your analogy just doesnt cut it, or at least im failing to see it. I find the iDrive more complicated than necessary. We all know how much criticism the iDrive earned in the past few years. i am not the only one in this.

and i am talking about the HCI (human-computer interaction) interface. i thought i was specific enough, i am not talking about the steering wheel, etc. what you said.

I use windows, *nix, and Mac OSX. I've found mac OSX to be useless to switch from windows; it offers no real advantage but more from your pocketbook and a new learning curve. Mac OSX is a joke in the business world, there's a reason big business is so PC-centric. *nix is great mainly for servers.

Working as an IT dood in the LA/OC area, nothing beats the ease, price, and quality of Microsoft's server software. *nix is great to use as well for many server applications.

Macbook pro, rigged out with 3 gb of memory. Never go back to PC, not worth the headache. My sister ordered brand new Dell computer with Vista preinstalled, Vista was so bad that she returned her computer and got iMac instead.
The only thing I miss about PC is shitload of software that you don't find on Macs, such as GOOD video and audio editors.

I am sorry I did not notice your sig line when I made the G35 comment I was not making a personal attack there. I made the comment in the past when people claim why the G35 is a better car, and the two thing they bring up is cost and the gadgets in the car. I just find it funny that someone would buy a performance car for the gadget it has and not what is under the hood. But different people have different priorities.

As you pointed out, people trash the BMW because of the iDrive, which I did not get because I knew it was not worth it. Personally I do not think buying any car like a BMW is about the gadget, grant it nice when they work, but not the sole reason to buy.

Back to my point, Both BMW and Apple focus on what is important and do those things well, and you can find those things which apple has messed up too but, it not the important things.

I guess I should come clean here, I have own Macs since 1984, I have used them personally as well as at work, use to bring my powerbooks into work and use them, and for the most part never had issues at work. I also work for Apple Powerbook Division for 6 yrs back in the early days.

So I have an obvious bias here....

here's a boring story of mine.

sometimes i have to work at coffee shops like starbucks (just to be away from the office, no i dont work FOR starbucks). So anyway, at 8 am the coffee shops are filled with people "working" on their Dells. around 5 pm they all disappear. then at like 6 pm the place is FILLED with students "studying" on their MAC's. it's funny.

when it's 6 pm i feel ashamed working on my Dell Latitude. i think im buying a MAC soon just for that lol

I'm basically saying Apple is more user friendly.

And I don't think you are qualified enough to talk about I-Drive since you do not own a BMW yet. I do agree that the I-Drive could be greatly improved but I do feel people make more of an issue with it than they should. There are many short-cuts and voice commands you can combine with I-Drive to make the experience a lot better. Basically, I-Drive is less cumbersome than what people think but it should be much more intuitive and user friendly. Once playing with it for a bit, it's not bad at all.

People often compare the Lexus touch screen to the I-Drive. I actually find the Navi features of the BMW much better but the touch screen interface is basically idiot proof.

Basically, for you to call it one of the worst HCI interfaces ever, is like me after buying my MacBook and calling OSX junk after only playing with it for a bit. Go buy your 335i and see if your opinion changes after a month. OSX was frustrating for me after the first few hours but from an IT perspective, I learn a bit faster than your average consumer since that is my line of work.

> Mac OSX is a joke in the business world,

There's at least one large successful multinational running on mostly Macs: Apple.

> Working as an IT dood in the LA/OC area, nothing beats the ease, price, and quality of Microsoft's server software.

That's exactly what the local windows jockeys say in public. You'd be stupid to undermine your livelyhood by telling people to use a platform that only needs 20% of the IT resources required to keep a windows-centric office running (Gartner research)

Plus, noone has ever been fired for buying microsoft. It's the perfect excuse.

Actually I remember many auto magazines saying BMW's interface was horrible and that Idrive was the worst.

But that aside, Mac's are user friendly. But so are Windows. Apple is noway more user friendly. How can you even come to that conclusion? What sets it apart user friendly wise?

Most of the reviews were before the recent updates that made I-Drive faster. Also, many of them have very little seat time in their test cars.

Easy. I've worked on PCs all my life and do it for a living. Everything in OSX usually just, works? Plug in a USB device, it works right away. Plug in a printer, hey it works. If you need to install drivers, it's much more simple than Windows. If you need to find a file, hey "Finder" finds it in 2-5 seconds. Try finding a file on your HD in Windows. It could take 10+ minutes if you have a big hard drive. Viruses? No problems in OSX. Help feature? OSX > Windows.

The PC world is enormous compared to Apple/Mac. In the PC world, you have hundreds of vendors making the same product. You have different motherboards, chipsets, soundcards, video cards, mice, printers, etc.. Since there are is so much different hardware that has to work together, you have more potential for hardware conflict. In the Apple world, everything is pretty much controlled. There are only a handful of products available for your PC (other than peripherals). Options are definitely nice, but when you can control what hardware goes into your computer, you'll run into less incompatibility issues.

I can go on and on about this forever but I won't. I will make these statements, I still like PCs. They pay the bills, I am in IT for a living. However, I do like my Macbook Pro/OSX better than my Windows machines (I have several and do get my hands on the latest and greatest due to my line of work). I am no way an Apple fan boy, my line of work doesn't allow me to be.

If I were to buy a computer for someone who doesn't know anything about computers, my future child, w/e, it will be a Mac.

OC 335i,

You bring up an interesting point. People site a PC as better because they can get all this software and hardware that the Mac does not have. But how many people actually use all that stuff all the time, very few. And these are the same people who complain they can not get all these things working together.

I find people buying habbits a bit strange some times, people will make a buying decision based on things that generally have no value to them. But hey it does this and this so it must be good and I must have it. I call them Check list buyers, they list all the features and buy the one with the longest list.
