They won't take the risk again , to blow the PU again , because MAX is leading the 'WDC now .
The only fix that Ferrari currently has is to run Charlie's PU with a lower power mapping to make it (hopefully) to the finish line in Canada ..

Flyer

1. Norris
2. Alonso
3. Yuki

Max and LEC collide (racing incident)

Sainz leads and beaches it

Perez 5 sec penalty for running Lando off track after safety car restart.

Yuki in P2 until last lap racecraft by Alonso

Alonso runs almost no downforce which allows him to fly over chicanes without going off track. Rules do not explicitly disallow flying over chicanes.

What a strange team environment - if Lewis doesn’t perform well then the whole team can’t celebrate successes (bottas era and now Russell) what happens if Lewis signs up for another 2 years?

Seems logical that a talented Merc engineer may explore other options long term. Especially with RBR and VW entering the mix.

After parking the car, Russell looked for additional team members and saw no one. Unfortunate situation at that team.

They coddle Lewis like he's a child.

It's the most embarrassing thing you can do to a grown man.

Absolutely ..
Yesterday Sainz said : I don't know the '22 Ferrari . Not yet !

No wonder , as he is in gravel racing

Ferrari will lose it , because of this ...

Bouncing impacts

Russell is correct:

F1 teams do not care for driver health.

Merc cares least of all.

FIA needs to step in and save Russell from Merc team.

Top line is Merc trying to retire Russell.

Looks to be a one team problem according to that graph.

If Merc continues to complain. Only thing to do is put sensors on the cars. Set a maximum threshold for porpoising. If teams are found exceeding it in practice or quali. FIA tells that team to raise ride height or pack up and go home. For driver safety...right Merc?

Only penalize the teams purposely harming their drivers with setup.

Ferrari is blessed to have LEC as driver: excellent skills, resilient nature and kind(red) spirit. He can handle setbacks without drama. You will see that he will be on top of his game again in Canada - no whining, but "Let's go, ragazzi !". His will power won't be broken by DNFs. He can handle it - it's rather a question whether the car and team can handle the races.

IMHO LEC is one of the most likeable F1 drivers of the current era.

Didn’t know Sainz drives half season. Full time pay for half the work. Well done lad.

Pretty disappointing that Mercedes does not publicly give the credit due to RUS after parking his car in top 3 with cameras around. Is it too hard for Merc to publicly give RUS a warm arrival after parking his car ? Doesn't the pit crew get bonuses for podium finishes ?

Situations like this may galvanize wingman RUS to keep outperforming team leader HAM time and time again.

Hypothetical: maybe the 24-year young HAM could have kept up with the 24-year young RUS. Reality: the 37-year old HAM cannot keep up anymore with the 24-year young RUS. It has become too demanding to keep up with the stiff competition. Without Merc team orders to swap position, HAM will end the 2022 season behind RUS.

The circle of F1 life: alike ALO and VET, it's also time for HAM to move over and make his seat available for the new generation. In the past also ALO, VET and HAM were offered an F1 seat, they raced and achieved their WDC titles. Yes, they can still show some fancy tricks on track so now and then, but so do all those missing F1 opportunities in the waiting room right now, such as Oscar Piastri, Nyck de Vries, Jüri Vips and others.

Yeah Russel will absolutely out perform hamilton this season, but we also need to remember Hamilton is the test mule for all of the experimental merc parts this year so we have to give him some credit because his car is always going to be a bit off because of this. Remember he ran extra optical ride height sensors on his car, and he ran experimental aero and suspension (in baku) on his car to help the team learn so he always has some extra load or uncertainty in his car vs. George. Factoring that in, he did do a pretty good job cutting through the field in baku with a car that was more unsetteled compared to George's car.

Oh yeah one more thing, merc have released an update video on Baku and they don't think their bouncing is porpoising, they think their barcelona aero package solved that. They think the bouncing is literally the car slamming into the track and bouncing back up because of ride height and suspension related reasons. I believe red bull and ferrari have their plank and tea tray supported with a damper so when it hits the track the impact is cushioned and doesn't cause a sudden jolt. With merc (atleast what was said during the launch) they use a buckle mechanism so there isn't the same level of cushioning it just gives causing alot more shock. I don't know if merc updated this to use a damper back when they updated in Barcelona.

That's a very good point, Lewis has been running a varied setup as I think he knows they can't win this year. His feedback to the engineering team is more valuable at this point then him trying to pick up poles he will never reach in that car. The other thing is he’s been racing F1 since 2007, and one thing I’ve noticed with people that have been doing anything at a high level for a long period of time is knowing when to back off mentally to save yourself from burnout. George is talented but he’s young and happy to be with a “top” team. He’s going out guns blazing each moment he’s on the track, he’s trying to prove himself. It appears Lewis has relegated himself to being a test mule and backed off a bit. Could this be age, maybe but he has done this in the past when the car and team are just not competitive. I’ve seen this with other drivers in other series over the years, one thing age teaches you is to pick your battles and save your physical and mental energy for when it matters most. The hard part of that approach is coming back from that “mental break” and not becoming complacent.

It looks like Merc is in a year long test phase, sure they want to be at the front, but they are still developing, as they really either got the concept wrong or underdeveloped it due to that fight with RB last year. That being said I have to give RB a lot of credit for being in that fight last year and still designing a race wining car, while still fighting teething issues with the car through the first few races. Of course, Max and Checo have done a great job driving, and Max has definitely matured as a driver, but of course that will be tested to the max (no pun intended) if he and Checo get into a close championship battle. Which could happen and would be interesting to see.

That is interesting information on the plank and tea trey, and makes sense. The other cars still have a bit of a bounce but it does looked damped compared to the back breaking Merc.

Merc is going to ruin their relationship with Russell. He's probably going to be looking to try and move to Ferrari or Red Bull if this continues. He should have seen this at Sakhir 2020. I don't see Mercedes climbing out of this hole they're in any time soon. I think at best they'll get slightly competitive before 2026 regs come into play and then Porsche power units and Audi will be on the grid.
