Guys we have our 1st casualty - the chevy bolt is out. My wife thinks it looks weird and she can't see herself driving a "chevy".

Maybe it's a... "it's me not you" situation... I used to drive my parents' 200k mile toyota corolla in high school and that shit was bulletproof. So my reliability standards are warped.

I need a reality check though.... I will not be purchasing a 200k mile car or even a 100k mile car. And I'm not an abusive high school kid flooring the shit out of the poor car every chance I get and other generally abusive behavior (I blew the transmission on my 1st car, a 1993 maxima, by pretending it was a manual). Ugh... I hate high school version of me...

Plus it would only get maybe 3k miles a year.

Any reason to go with the cx5 over the cx3/30?

Mazda CX30 has the exact same interior dimensions as their 3 Hatchback. It’s just a crappy crossover. We owned a CX5 turbo AWD and it was a hoot. Pulled a trailer well, was crazy quiet inside, had some decent pep, and Mazda is one of (if not the last) Japanese brand to NOT throw a CVT in their lineup. The 6 speed auto isn’t terribly amazing, but it sure beats a CVT. We regret selling our CX5 so much that we are going to get rid of our current CRV in favor of another CX5. For the CX50, they partnered with Toyota and it’s more geared towards “off road.” It has selectable drive mods (like snow, sport, mud, etc) whereas the regular CX5 is normal and sport only. I’m a HUGE fan of the 2023 refresh on the CX5 (just a facelift and trim name changes), but the Turbo trim is awesome.

I guess what attracts me about the cx3/30 is smaller exterior dimensions. My goal is to get something really small that can still fit a couple carseats and not take up much space in the garage. The cx5 is at the absolute limit of how big I'd be ok going, so I guess I'll have to see how the two compare when I'm shopping.

I suggested the CX-5 because if you want to buy new, the lowest trim is in your price range, the preferred package is a bit more expensive at $28K. I think 2023 will be the last year of the CX-5 so you may be able to negotiate some on price. The CX-5 is 180.1 inches long, which you said is your max length.

The CX-30 is slightly more off-road oriented and is 173 inches long and about 2 inches less wide, which might be a bit small for your wife. I have a friend who I suggested the CX-5 to, which she did buy. She now says she'd rather have a bit more cargo room. For the price the CX-5 interior is way above its price class in design and materials.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

So I should clarify, it's actually more something I'll be driving as opposed to my wife My main motivation is that I'll soon be replacing my G20 with a RWD G80, and I'd like to have a separate winter car as opposed to putting wear and tear on the G80 while also juggling a RWD car in the snow. The other ancillary benefits are - if I ever need to take the X7 for something, and as my wife doesn't know how to drive manual as has no desire to learn, she'll also have a car she can use if need be. And a few times a year we have family stay over and it'll be nice to have that 3rd car they can use as opposed to having them rent something.

In terms of the size, my max of 180" is motivated by our garage arrangement. We don't have a traditional side-by-side 3 car garage - it's a weird tandem garage, where the 3rd spot is currently filled with junk. While my plan is to clear it out and maybe even finish the garage ... there will still be some junk that goes there. So the smaller the car (while still being able to fit 2 kids in the back) the better.

That being said I'll definitely compare the CX-30 and the CX-5 when I begin the shopping process.

Then it's simple, get an R8 and we can be V10 homies.

Mazda 3 Hatch with a turbo then, all turbos come AWD. Hilariously fun, 6ish second 0-60 time, same interior room as CX30 (which you said fits the bill in terms of size). Seriously, look up the leg, shoulder, hip, and storage between the 3 Hatch and CX30, they’re identical. Wife previously had a 3 Hatch non turbo, thing was a hoot. Got 39 mpg on the way to the beach too. We both miss the hell out of that car, so much so that the CRV is either getting replaced for a CX5 or a turbo 3 hatch…

I do like the look of it... as long as I can keep it around that $25k limit
