I also tip my mechanics, tire guys, delivery guys, etc. When i need a quick pressure check on my tires, i throw the guy at the tire shop $5. Is it necessary? No. But when I was younger working those jobs, getting a tip, even if it was just a couple bucks, made my day.

If a customer offers me (MGR) a tip, I ask if they would give it to the technician instead or Ill make a point to hand it to them. |

Never ever thought of that !
But I go on google/tripadvisor/youtube and give them good comments and referrals, anyone I know who needs work, I send them there way, I think a referral works better than a tip or a great google review. Plus going back and spending my money with them, helps them a lot, no advertising right, repeat business is always good with these guy's, IMHO (I'm talking about small independant mom&pop shops) Quote:

I'm utterly gobsmacked that Alfisti hasn't made his way into this thread yet.
I mean, I know what he's going to say in terms of his general sentiment on the matter, but I don't know what flowery language he's going to sandwich the sentiment in between, and his creative use of the English language is what I enjoy most. |

if the business does good, usually so do the employees, especially if you mention by name, nowadays, people live and die by google reviews, saying that "john was a fantastic tech do not use anyone else" is more likely to get John a rise or stay on, of course not saying not to slip john a fiver !

I've been to places where they've added 20-25% gratuity to like a 100 dollar meal automatically and then the server expects a tip on top of that? Fuck off. |

If your going to automatically charge me a gratuity, why should I put more on ?
One year at our regular Porsche Christmas dinners, the place , which was fantastic btw, we had like 5 tables of I don't know 6 or 7 each They made some SERIOUS money of us, they put a gratuity. I did ask the boy's to pony up as the service was exceptional, and we also had a bit of a christmas awards ceremony as well, some of the guys, said exactly "errmm isnt that already been included" Funny enough the guys driving the 924's and the 944's/68's all ponyied up without any complaint, all the newer 911's, the guy's with 2 houses, 3 cars basically new money were the ones biyuatching, the same guy's put change into a collection for tsunami victums in 2004, everyone else, put notes and even cheques, I said I would match all donations. somone even put 2 1penny's God how cheap, you drive a £40k porsche (in 2004) and got heart for 2pence |

However when I did work at other places some places gave bonuses some did not. The ones that did, it was never a large % of my salary. It wasn't that if I did NOT get a bonus I would basically be living in poverty making way below minimum wage. I did not accept the job because I knew I would be getting a bonus. Not an apples to apples comparison at all. Pay the servers a normal salary and give the exceptional ones a bonus then. |

That being said I do not agree with the system in general. However that is the system we have and I know they make little money without tips. Just because I don't like the system it doesn't mean I don't follow the "rules". Last edited by dreamingat30fps; 08-04-2021 at 10:41 PM.. |

Gratuities then and now
During normal times, I typically tip a good waitress or waiter 20% if the service is good and the food halfway decent.
Since we've been released from jail and can dine-in again and considering the severe hardships on restaurant staff during the past year or so, I've been tipping $20.00 to $25.00 (lunch for two). That averages about 55 to 65%. They need it.

My wife and I eat lunch at the same places every Thursday and Friday. Our bill at one is usually around $14 and I tip $6. They always have our drinks ready as soon as we sit down and know what we want to eat. I pay the good tip for quick service, faster I'm out the door the faster I'm making money again.
$50 meal I'll normally tip $20. If service is slow ( the server) I'll tip 20% but never under unless something truly horrible happens. I like seeing people light up and making their days better. I've also seen servers get stiffed on tips and will usually make up for that table as well. Bunch of misers in here. |

Adding an auto-tip is in bad taste, and is a move on behalf of the management.
The staff dont straight up ask for tips, no one does. I'd expect it on the bill for large dinner parties, because it's a common thing now for that, and having worked as a waitress and gotten next to nothing from big tables is total BS. But not at a hotel unless I was hosting an event. |
