Goofball. Don't you know that Hatorade is what they drink when they see you cruising in your cool car? (Banned)

Not that anyone who drinks it cares, but upon hearing the wife is an endurance athlete, our MD nutritionist was relieved to find out that we don't drink Gatorade. She said it's horrible for you. She says due to their fabulous marketing and branding, getting athletes to stop drinking it is one of her most difficult tasks.

Ok - my .02 on the 'water' is all you need thought and comments....
Carbs are the preferred fuel for the body. Calories that are not burned via exercise then convert to Glucose. Unused Glucose is stored in the muscle and body as fat. As someone who once ate and burned over 9,000 calories a day - Not sure I completely agree with sugar theory regarding sports drinks. Sugar is necessary in limited quantities for intense exercise, and sugar can/will be burned during and after intense exercise. What is much more important - the essential electrolyte replacement. |

Gatorade for athletes is not unhealthy. Gatorade for a 45 year old adult who works a 9-5 desk job and does not workout frequently is unhealthy.
As ASB said, we need carbs to function properly (ignoring diets like keytosis). Fast digesting (simple) carbs like sugar is converted to immediate energy, while slower digesting (complex) carbs must go through a process to convert to energy. Simple carbs (like sugar found in Gatorade) is exactly what an athlete needs to exert as much potential energy as able. But, a dude sitting at his desk does not need simple carbs because he does not have a need for immediate energy. He needs slower digesting complex carbs that take time to breakdown and provide constant energy at a lower level than simple carbs. If desk dude takes in simple carbs, his body will store as fat. Also, one huge factor many continue to ignore is metabolism. A former professional athlete of 15 years NOW working a 9-5 desk job with inconsistent workout routine will metabolize carbs (and fats and protein of course) differently than a biologically similar dude who has never competed athletically professionally. Former athlete can take in simple carbs at his desk job and not store fat, while non-athlete will store fat. Over time, if former athlete continues to skip working out, his metabolism will slow down and he will began to store body fat roughly similar to non-athlete.
