I think the delivery is important. Also, I try to ask myself if there is any value to what I'm about to say? If what I'm about to say holds no value, I usually try to refrain. Telling a knucklehead that they're a knucklehead usually holds no value...nothing is gained.

Nothing wrong with being polite to people. I hate some asshat who is just rude for the sake of being rude, or they think it makes them look tough or cool. That’s what I think of when comparing honey to vinegar.

^^^Absolutely. There is an indescribable feeling that comes with being at a certain age and maturity with sufficient resources to buy whatever you want (within reason) and choosing not to do so. There is no way properly explain this to a younger car enthusiast in terms they would appreciate. I know that when I was younger I didn't get it.

I know a couple of guys my age in my area who have new Corvettes. They're sharp looking, but not my cup of tea. I had fun with my Z4 around 10 years ago, but I'm done with the sports driving thing now. I like mellow and relaxed.

I know exactly what you mean. Buying a manual transmission car was important to me 2.5 years ago and I had a connection to get into a new M3 (my 4th over 20+ years) when the market was crazy. I still like my car but am actually thinking about selling it. I'd probably get a M440i Gran Coupe (with automatic) which is, in the grand scheme of things, no slouch. Not ready to drive in the fast lane with my left turn signal on for miles and miles at 10 under yet, but more relaxed.

Add to that I've been diagnosed with macular degeneration in my right eye and I'm now far from the sharpest knife in the drawer driving-wise. But it's OK -- life is good.

I still use the wife's Mazda 3 as a DD in town, and it works well for me because it's responsive to inputs, parks easy, and feels 2/3 the size of my car while having the same exterior dimensions. Less importantly, and because it's not lowered, I also don't have to spread 2X4s to navigate it in and out of our driveway.

This has lead me to thinking I'd like a more mellow and relaxed car for around-town driving. (I tend to lean on the MZ3 pretty hard, and it wouldn't hurt to get away from that, especially now that I'm homing-in on 80.)

Due to having owned so many BMWs, I'm pretty much committed to them and am considering ditching the MZ3 for a 5 Series. I've owned two of them before: an E12 (ancient, I know) and an E39 (ancient now, too, but not to us oldsters, right!), and while I'm not much interested in any of the modern tech that comes with a new German car, I think the current and previous 5 Series' generations could work. I'm thinking a G30 M550i with its AWD and V-8 might be the best way to make the transition.

I miss actual shifters, even if they're for a slushbox. The pathetic POS sticking out of the side of the steering column on my GLC300 drives me nuts. Half the time it won't let me shift into reverse because my foot isn't pressing hard enough on the brake pedal. Then it gets into this warning mode that I have to let clear so I can try again. And pushing a button on the end of the stick to get into park? WTF? It also has this annoying collision avoidance warning thing that only tells me I'm passing by a mailbox. Doesn't make a peep if there is an actual collision threat in front of me. It's a comfortable ride and it's been paid up for years, so I keep it. But there are several things about it that get me thinking about a new vehicle every now and then. My fear is that I'll get back into car loan payments and then find that the new ride is worse than the GLC300.

My dream car would be my former E39 with modern Bluetooth electronics in it.

You just reminded me of another reason. I feel lucky that I'm old because I got to own a brand new 1997 BMW E39 540i followed by the impeccable 2003 E39 540i with M-tech package. Two great cars. I'd love to pick up a used one but I'm afraid of the issues that come with a 25 year old car. DGMW, new BMWs are amazing too, but there was something about that E39 that was special and it's great to be old enough to have owned it new and appreciate it 20+ years later.

Lucky enough to have people worried if they see me on the ground, yet spry enough to still be able to choose getting down and getting back up.

Wife came home over the weekend, and I was laying on the flor of the garage. Nice and cool, knees bent with the back flat. I was sure to look over and smile as she drove in, so she wouldn't freak.
