VW MKVII GTI with Performance Pack
VW MKVII Golf R
Civic Type R
BMW G01 X3 M40i

Thoughts? Is the Civic Type R civilized enough to daily? Anyone here own one who can give some feedback?

I can only provide feedback on the BMW. FYI, the G01 is the X3, and the G02 is the X4, not sure which one you were looking at, but they are my favorite daily driver BMW currently makes. It's the perfect size but the fuel economy is ridiculously impressive. When I drove one from South Carolina to Maryland, I averaged 30 mpg without trying too hard. The engine (B58) is a true gem. Having said all that, I've been keeping an eye out for a 2019 model and they are well over $40k though.

Can't comment on the other cars but there's people that swear by them, and some of these guys own expensive Porsches and Ferraris. I know my friend was looking to get a Civic Type R but they're going for over what they were new with 30k+ miles. Doesn't make so much sense to me personally.

I'm very curious about the MK7.5 GTI's. Seems like a reasonably priced car that does it all, but I think I'd want something bigger as I'm looking for something more practical rather than fun.

The CTR is incredibly fun, that being said none of the cars really fit the unique part of the original criteria. The G01/2 is fun in M40i form but you'll blend in with every other suburban mom and its a big contrast to a small lighter hatch like your i3. Mk7 is definitely the sweet spot in the Golf lineup, but not really unique and will never stand out. The CTR is probably the most qualified.

Yes, that's a typo. I want the X3 as I like the form factor and convenience.

The CTR might be a case of seeing if I can get a dealership let me pay MSRP (what a world we live in). Used prices are close to new, but at least you can actually find them!

I just found a new CTR in stock a few minutes from me. $25k markup. These guys are on crack.

I really like the Golf from the options you're considering.

Anyhow, I second the guy earlier regarding the Giulia. Of course i'm also biased, but if you're willing to stretch your budget a few grand it's a really great car for the price. The Giorgio chassis is world-class, steering is the quickest of any sedan in the world (to my knowledge) with proper road surface feedback, interior is nice enough in the 2020+ models, and the styling attracts a lot of attention. Only downside is going to be the lack of power compared to some of the other cars you're looking at. 0-60 in mid 5s for the RWD version, so quick but not overtly fast.

Alfa of Van Nuys cut me a really good deal last year after some back-and-forth over several weeks. On a relatively well-equipped car, my final MSRP after discount was only $43k! Also got a couple grand in manufacturer rebates on top of that.

Except you can only cut so much diesel from a barrel of crude...

Yep, energy density is higher for oil-burners, but it doesn't make a lot of sense to push it, since demand will go up and price will go up accordingly, then gasoline becomes dirt cheap because it exists in excess.

Driving on diesel is still considerably cheaper in most parts of the world than driving on gasoline. (and how much litres of any fuel you can get from a barrel of oil is limited...but it is simpler to make diesel from biomass as pretty much any vegetable oil is suitable and if you have an older diesel, it can be a direct replacement)
Constructing a diesel engine however is usually more expensive, although gasoline engines of course now start to use the more expensive diesel technologies (like direct injection, and I believe even variable geometry turbos)

But this is all a bit off topic.

I have had a MK7.5 Golf R as my daily for past 2 years. Good on gas (average 28.xx mpg on my 31 mi commute), fun to drive, practical, CarPlay, and 6 yr/72k mile bumper to bumper warranty. Best daily I've had so far. Lots of rattles, noises, etc, but it is what it is, as it's not a luxury car, and I've accepted this reality.

There's not much else I would want for a daily, and I'm not ready for electric at the moment. I'll be past my warranty in 2.5 years due to my commute, which is when I'll mod it. Eurotrash it.

I have owned an F82 M4, M3CS but I absolutely love my 19 Golf R. Best daily driver ever and comes closest to the higher price M cars for half the price. DSG is a must too. Good luck man!

I don't see how everyone says a golf gti is fun to drive. They are boring. Now a Fiesta ST is a fun little car to drive for Fwd.

we just swapped out our 2006 E90 with a 2015 MINI F55 (4-door hatch) and it's a blast to drive. even though it's bigger than the traditional mini coupe, it still feels like a go cart. the 3-cylinder B38 has a ton of low end torque that makes it feel much faster than it really is.
