Social Media - Boon or Bane?

This is really an interesting point.
W/o doubt younger ppl would judge this completely different and would state, that they cant live w/o social media and their "friends".
In older times this friend was called "Harvey" and was sidekick from Jerry Lewis.
Today its a must to show off at any time at any location with any z-prominent person. Fuq dat and get off my lawn!
Sometimes I miss hours and hours of life chats onto referring platforms, today I use sometimes Discord for some of my interests. Too sad that we are almost into too different times of the world to get together to discuss this and other stuff live, just thinking.

Social Media is poison. Plain and simple.

It is somewhat akin to slowly administered, arsenic poisoning in that it creates a cascade of seeming idiopathic maladies that degrade the body and its systems before it finally kills it, entirely.

FB is the biggest problem and perpetrator of the ills in our society as it has given a global platform to every idiot, passive-aggressive personality, and other nonfunctioning person who, in past times, would have only tortured their family and others in close circle.

Yes we did. It amazes me how many kids come in for interviews and sit there with their face in their phone. It happens more and more.....

I have lamented the amount of times I have seen this in recent years. I am an avid phone user as well but itÂ’s relegated to non human contact moments in my life. Recently went to a resort with several friends, 6 of us to be precise, for 4 days. Not one day went by I didnÂ’t have moments looking around, 13,000 feet in elevation to see everyone on their phones. ItÂ’s disgusting. Why plan time to be together if youÂ’re not together? We are programming ourselves to only speak digitally.

It doesn't get better after they are hired. One of my DW's co-workers comes into their daily morning team meeting with her phone in hand every single time, typing away and giggling for at least 10-15 minutes until their supervisor tells her to put her phone down and pay attention. She does comply, but with a "huuuuh!" disrespectful exhale directed at the supervisor. She is also out of sick/vacation days for the year within three weeks of the new benefits year, and has to be reminded every single day to fill out her time sheet and account for her hours working on various sub-tasks. The supervisor is also a millennial, and not much better. Their entire office sounds like Romper Room, and my DW is the only do-bee there to actually work.



I assume that Miss Manners does not consider a job applicant asking for the company's guest wifi password during an interview as good etiquette?????

Millennial here, hell almost Gen Z. 100% agree with the comments in regards to how your parents raised you. Don't think it has to do with generational as much because there are plenty of gen x & boomers that are glued to their devices as well. Those that constantly seek approval from others are the biggest offenders for the abuse of social media. Without the need for approval the "need" to post on social media dwindles.

As to the job interview and glued to their phone comments, why the hell does it matter. They could be reading something pertaining to the position, would you still berate them? If I'm waiting for a while I'm not just going to stare off into space, I'll preoccupy myself. Now those abusing use of their phones during work hours is completely different, but people seem to assume too much these days. Judgement happens from all fronts, I'm constantly teaching boomers basic computer functions and you don't see me bitching lol.

I feel like there is a sliding scale for each situation. Reading a phone while waiting for an interview is one thing (although I don't recommend it) and videoing the arrival to an interview is another.

My favorite with the elders and IT is when employees will say "I'm too old to learn that, I'm just not good with technology"... well maybe you should retire then since computers have been a part of your job for over 20 years now.

Like I said, not mad about it and don't care enough to judge. Just two sides to every coin. What I don't like is teaching something twice, that grinds my gears. Ask once, completely fine I'll show you and help, after that it should be on you.

I 100% judge them, but it's because I work in educational technology, and most of the people saying this are capable but are just too lazy, or are "askholes".

You know what, even during online conferences you would hear various sounds of different messengers or chatprograms at I would rate this as a disrespect to all other applicants who are strictly at the meeting.
We had a few live interviews into the past, and all guys with non-silenced cell phones were out instantly. If your social life has to stand above the real life, your way went at a certain point wrong.

That's what I came in to say. If I'm the hiring manager and step out to a pool of potential, I'm immediately going to regard the one without a phone stuffed to their face higher. You came prepared with your #1 priority being this exact moment - not in a distant internet world.
