Chicago has very few level 3 chargers. It is certainly something to work on. Also people need to precondition their batteries on the way to a supercharger. It is easy to do.

Finally, for those having their 12 volt batteries die in the cold. That is definitely a thing. I had that happen to my ICE in the dead of winter years ago. The 12 volt batteries don't last forever and when they do die on you it does suck.
So you call a neighbor or family or friend, get a jumpstart. Drive to the local Autozone and have the parts monkey install a fresh battery. Takes maybe an hour. Then you have 5 to 7 years of cold starts ahead of you.

If you live in a cold climate perhaps a preemptive 12V battery replacement every 5 years is warranted. Sort of like preconditioning the HVB EV battery on the way to the frozen Tesla charger. Good ICEV stewardship.

Of course and with all the chargers that are faulty or just not working in such an easy going place like LA (where they should really mostly be fine) one can only imagine what it's like in places that are extremely cold, as seen in the vid above.

I think the key takeaway was the point about Tesla's vertical integration EV>Charger>payment situation vs. CCS system chargers that have to communicate to 40 or so different EV manufacturers. Obviously CCS is an SAE charging standard with comms protocols, but it seems it doesn't work very well.

Grid operators can use EV aggregation to collectively control the charging of large numbers of EVs. Determining how much power should flow from the grid to aggregated EVs is not as simple as adding up each individual EV's charging capacity. This is because an EV can be plugged in but already fully charged, so it could be assigned charging from the aggregate that it cannot fulfill. This can lead to unrealistic estimates of how much charging aggregated EVs can accept. Inaccurate estimates impact the grid's ability to meet all power demands in the most efficient and cost-effective way. So operators need a way to send charging signals that can be disaggregated to fit individual EV capabilities.
https://www.nrel.gov/news/program/20...-charging.html

Bottom line is you can't opt out. If there is a issue with the power available on the grid you lose.

I don't even know what to say, this is the stupidest discussion I have ever been a part of. You're living in some alternate reality. Managed charging is not mandated, and doesn't even exist in most places. Even if I wanted to be a part of a managed charging network, my electricity supplier doesn't have a system set up.

But keep on living in your own alternate reality. It's pretty clear that these conversations are pointless because even when proven wrong, you still think you're right. Going to abandon this thread now. Enjoy your anti-ev life.

Aren't 12v battery deaths a major pain when they happen in EV? (Appreciate newer ev use 16v?) Also chance of 12v battery premature failure is much more prevalent in EV.

Per spotted_model on Twitter and he lives somewhere in the northern US:

"Drove the YP an hour to the airport Tuesday morning early in snow and -18° weather. Of course warmed the car up in the garage for 5 minutes before I left. Comfy trip. Got to the airport at 54%. Neighbor texted me as I was in the air coming home last night after hearing all the Chicago horror stories asking if I need a ride home. Told him I would be fine. Got to the car after it had been cold soaked for 36 hours. Battery was down to 50%. Preheated as I walked through the airport. Got home an hour and 15 later at 19% and plugged in for today. Pretty boring story I know."

Thats really great, I live almost 3 hours from the airport. Again, if it works for you then great but not everyone has the same circumstance.

Not sure. They are easy to access since they sit in the front just under the near windshield plastic piece. I saw a video and it comes off easy. Tesla roadside or a dealer could replace.

Everyone should decide on their use case. My airport parking garage has NACS chargers available and they tend not to be full.

Excellent info. I was thinking LA (California) will have an excellent and mature infrastructure for EVs charging. I guess it is not. Not to say, Canada is 10 years behind LA.

I've been keeping up with the Polar Vortex (fancy for "Cold Snap") charging issue and winter driving issues over on an EV forum. What a cluster f. Why anyone would buy a $50K EV just to add this much hassle to their life has me completely befuddled. Last night driving home from my office after my H3T cold soaked all day in 15 deg. F, I was pondering about the Great Polar Vortex EV Fiasco of 2024 and amusing myself thinking how privileged I am driving a truck all toasty inside with a GM small block under the hood.

This whole EV thing is a joke.
Exactly If you have more than one car in your household that is ICE, then having a EV is fine as a toy Life is already full of drama why add one more (EV)

A great deal of NA experiences these cold temperatures in winter, some will suggest it's usually not long term, maybe only 20 or 30 days a year. But as more and more people make the change these challenges will get much worse.

Well said We have to include those future drivers don't know anything about the potential issues about the EV and EV chargers. All in their heads are driving from point a to point b.
