I rarely drink wine anymore as I don't enjoy headaches the next day, but when I did; Reisling (Relax), White Zinfandel and Pinot Grigio were typically my "go to's"

Rombauer is awesome

My favorite winery right now is Rombauer. If you can visit Napa Valley, this winery is worth your time. The setting is perfect. Picnic tables in the garden. Great views. And, of course, the wine is remarkable. My favorite is any of their Zins and Chardonnay best, but its all excellent.

When I don't feel like drinking expensive wine, my favorite cheap wine right now is Apothic Red.

Will have to check Rombauer out. Our current favorite vineyard to visit is Stags' Leap (plural stag, as opposed to Stag's Leap - singular stag, although that's pretty good too).

If you get to Napa, go in person. It's really special. I've lived in the Bay Area for years I've been lucky enough to visit several wineries. Rombauer is special both in physical setting for the winery and for their consistent production of really great wines, regardless of variety.

Here's a test. Go to your favorite wine shop. Get a bottle of 2017 Zinfandel and a bottle of Chardonnay. Bring them home. Drink them both (with friends). Report back! Have fun!

Family friend works in the industry and has been recommending to take us to Rombauer. The weather here has been so crazy so haven’t had time to do wine tasting in Napa yet. Thinking we should do that in the next few weeks. It’s harvest season so should be really nice. Have also tried Apothic Red and liked it.

Please wait for a clear day. Bring a picnic basket and after tasting, buy a bottle of wine and go grab one of the tables in terraced garden. We want pictures!

I've added a couple to get you started.

After looking locally and on wine.com and striking out, I decided to contact Tor Winery directly to replenish my stock of Petite Syrah. Sierra was very helpful, and I have a case arriving next Wednesday. Very happy!

Thanks for digging up this thread. I was looking for it last week and couldn't find it. Only problem is now I don't remember why I was looking for it and what I wanted to post. Get off my lawn! It will come to me eventually.

Happy Friday boys and girls.

You're welcome! Think it was on page 6, has been far too long since it had any love.

Just an addendum to my post above, when speaking with her I asked about the situation up there. As you may have guessed, it is not good. Tor was not damaged, but many wineries were, and the full damage to this year's grapes has yet to be seen. Very sad.

If you're really serious - you extend that same mantra to bottles of booze.

I don't drink booze, but that's a scary thought.

Depends how many people and how long you've got.

A 750ml bottle is ~25.5 oz. A typical cocktail is 2-3 oz of booze, so that puts a bottle at roughly 12 drinks. If that's you and 3 pals, it's only 3 drinks per.

So an update on the Coravin. Idea was to use it when maybe I wanted a glass with dinner or at night but wife didn’t, or if we just wanted to try a glass from a good bottle without killing the bottle.

We have used it twice. The first time was flawless - exactly as advertised. Pretty amazing to see. The second time, not so much. The cork didn’t re-seal. We ended up just finishing the bottle off but now I don’t really want to try it again, especially on an expensive bottle. So waste of money.

Appreciate the review Rick! I have toyed with buying a Coravin for some time now but between the wife and me, we usually just kill the bottle! Guess we'll stick with that strategy...

Yeah we’re going back to that strategy. 2 people can easily kill a bottle but there are some times now or then when I just want a glass with dinner and thought this was worth a shot. Oh well.

It is dangerous for me to open a bottle of wine anymore. My wife (pretty much) quit drinking (autoimmune), and I can't seem to not finish an open bottle of wine. I rarely open a bottle if I'm not cooking with it.

So we have only fallen into a pattern of only opening up the good stuff on the weekends (like tonight w/ filets) but during the week we keep solid, lower priced wines which frequently come with a screw-top for saving. I know, screw top wine, blasphemy!

Nice way to revive a thread on life support.

We had a bottle of The Bard (2017) from Realm Cellars on Sunday and I didn’t even think of posting. It was very good, but I think it will be better in a couple of years.

Recently had 2 defective bottles of Valdicava Brunello (2010), which was sad because no one likes bad bottles and this was one of my favorites. The vendor gave us a credit for the third (still unopened) bottle even though I bought it 2 years ago. Nice show of goodwill by them given the elapsed time, but I am quite certain it was bad when received as it has been temp controlled since arrival.

This is a great thread, Rick! WE can't let it croak!

There is not much worse (maybe this should go in the first world problems thread) than opening a bottle and finding it is corked... Very glad to hear that the vendor has made good!

Another good one to mention - recently opened a bottle of Sena (2015) a Bordeaux blend from Chile. Really nice wine on the fruity side but not too much so. I have a few more bottles stashed away for a little longer. I think it will be good for several more years, but this isn’t a super long-termer. Ready to drink now.
