Dude, you're not doing ANYTHING wrong. Letting things happen organically is almost always a lot more rewarding IMHO.

I tried the dating app thing for about 2 seconds and quickly realized I had no interest in it.

From my perspective, the reason for this is that in real life, you are engaging in activities, places, and people that are "on par" with yourself. Online, it's all comers, which results in some instances of "a catch" but many more of "not in my league."

Every time I touched the throttle a giant cotton ball appeared right on my ass and chased me down the road. Couldn't lose him no matter how hard I tried...even at well into triple digits, he was on me like a wet muumuu on a chubby Polynesian girl.
