So basically if he had driven better, he could have challenged Max.
I sure hope so, they have the same car.
But somewhere, the difference was made.
However, without the actual result, one can say anything.
Max qualifies better, he starts better (these are objective measureable facts), so he says the difference was made in the not so objective measurable aspect.
And what does that mean..."could have challenged"...
Now he challenged him too. He just lost...he was runner up.

And he says: "Once that happened (once he overtook LEC), we basically just maintained the gap throughout the race"
He means Max maintained the gap throughout the race. Unless Checo didn't give all he got and started cruising. But then you never win...

Leclerc had his chance at the start with new softs passing Checo yet he fell back from Max's relentless pace when he should have at least kept up with him which leads me to believe Ferrari are still wanting even with a reliable PU. If Checo has kept in front of Leclerc then he 'may' have kept up with Max and challenged aggressively.

Alonso was also been hit by Stroll .

If Alonso wasn't hit , I'm pretty sure he would show his rear wing to Charlie ...

Fernie was lucky not to get a puncture there but it's racing and he's a mature person who consoled a tearful Lance afterwards for his error.
