I highly, highly recommend you put a trigger lock on that AR, and much more importantly, start teaching your kids the gun safety rules, taking them to the range, letting them get the feel for it, and showing them the damage it can do.

Even when he plays with his nerf gun I always stress he is never point it at anyone in the house, including the dogs. He once pretended to shoot at his sister and it was taken away for a month.

I appreciate your concern, and this is why being a responsible gun owner is not to be taken lightly. I wish my wife would let me take her to the range, but she has no interest.

Best way to teach a kid that guns aren't trivial is to get them trained up on how to shoot them. We're starting with a high FPS pellet gun to learn the fundamentals about where (not) to point it, eye/ear protection, how to use the safety, check it when you're handed it, etc.

Best look on their faces was when the rule for animals was laid down. Simply put, you shoot it, you're eating it. I don't need them thinking it's cool to blast lizards and birds for kicks. They gulped pretty good on that one and my guess is they'll stick to targets and cans for now

The stain is one coat of Minwax 225 Red Mahogany 225 put on very thick then wiped off 20 minutes later. I applied a total of 7 coats of Tru-Oil by hand. After the 4th coat I wet sanded with 2,000 grit sandpaper between coatings. One issue I ran into is witness lines showing up on the 6th coat after what was intended to be a final aggressive leveling wet sand and then polish - I'm not sure if it was from not waiting long enough to dry or just the nature of the product. A 7th and final coat was applied and left to dry for a week. To finish it I used 0000 steel wool to remove runs and imperfections then hand polished with a light automotive polish followed by Mothers Micro Polishing Glaze to bring out a mirror shine and remove swirl marks. The last step was a coat of Adam's Americana carnauba wax - which seems like blasphemy for use on a communist rifle but hey look at the times!

7 years old is definitely old enough to start shooting a nice .22. Even an AR in .223 would be doable for some 7 year olds.

The problem is my son is immature. My daughter on the other hand would probably do well. My friend has a large plot of land where I could probably set up a nice little target range.

Decided to add a wrap to the hand guard on my rifle. I don't want to have to wear gloves when the tool heats up from a high round count. I chose a discreet black "Rail Rap" from Burn Proof Gear. Their "Heavy" version was the right size for my JP hand guard.

Nice! Great looking case. I wasn't that lucky w ammo. Got 80 rounds of tulammo as that's all a local NC shop had while I was there.

Did a little upgrade on the ear pro this weekend as I recover from surgery and watch the PGA Championship. Upgraded to gel ear pads for comfort and to get a better seal; and I covered the right ear cup with some fuzzy Velcro. The idea behind the Velcro is it provides a slight cushion for when the right ear cup bumps against the stock. I used to have a half-assed piece of gray Velcro on just the corner, but I decided to get my act together a bit more.

Thanks! It is pluck foam, but I am not a fan of the Tetris look, so I hand cut it. I gave it a couple coats of Plasti-dip to protect the foam from tears.
