Get a Fit if you can find one for that kinda money.

Toyota Corolla should get slightly better fuel economy (in real world driving) than a Fit and will provide a better overall cushy ride with more passenger comfort.

If it's strictly for gas mileage, comfort and only your mother will drive it, I'd recommend the Toyota.

If on the other hand you don't want a numb ride and value a terrier spirit in the driving experience and are will to trade some MPGs for fun to drive factor, definitely go with the FIT. Then you'll get the added versatility of a hatchback too.

The Fit is the best all around package. You can even get a brand new Fit Sport w/ Auto for around the Mid-16k range. Great gas mileage AND 60 cubic feet of cargo space

My wife has a 2009 Fit which has the same engine as the previous generation.

The fit gets about 35 mpg city and 40+ on the highway

I wanted her to get a civic but the fit was more practical.

A brand new elantra is 15K so I figure a *slightly* used one will only be 10K. Throw in that 100K powertrain warrantee and your mom would be good to go for 5-6 more years w/o worries of major tranny or engine issues driving 50 miles a day. Personally, I'd go for a slightly bigger car - like a Sonata. Honda Accords and Camry's are hard to get for 10K that have low miles.
