Having worked in the intelligence community as a both an ELINT analyst and sysadmin, and presently working as a sysadmin for a company that deals with these issues frequently, I'm probably a fairly reliable source. Don't take my word for it though, take NIST's:

Considering the vast majority of us are probably using such drives, I'll stand by my statement.

Note that according to Appendix A of the same document, degaussing a modern hard drive, whether it's SCSI or ATA, will destroy the drive.

For my part, I presently stick to the recommendations of the pre-November 2006 version of the DSS Clearing and Sanitizaion Matrix contained within DoD 5220.22-M (NISPOM).

However, as I said previously, it's always better to be too cautious than not cautious enough.
