Actually, I'm confused as to why your friend couldn't get an alternative set of tires since he's in a pinch, not as if it's a 'rocketship' and has only 1 dedicated set of tires and putting on others would make it 'explode'.

See the alpha move here would be to buy another S-class, take the tires, and junk the rest of the car

He's probably not a car guy and thinks he has to use the exact same set, or is afraid to use an alternative. Anyways, if you're like that you sometimes get f'd

Ok, I get that, but this was an emergency, surely he knows that there are other tires, and also, the shop should've suggested some alternatives too (so they failed being helpful and getting business as well). Kinda ridiculous he had to leave the car there and fly back, not as if his engine blew out.

You're being too logical.

To be fair, assuming that the driver is not car savvy; the dealership, knowing the circumstance, that told him the spec tires are out of stock and didn't inform him that he can use an alternative set or something is the real scumbag here.

Ya, all the parties have a learning moment here, oh well.

To be honest, I actually don't know...but he did look up tire availability and he did reach out to Mercedes direct. No luck.

Could wheel/tire be different for the AMG version?

I know the type. He probably knows a lot about something else, just not cars. But man did it bite him in the ass this time.

Haha, definitely savvy in others things if he can lay down 14+ stacks of high society and fly back home leaving his AMG in some stranger's garage

Man, he should've called you for help, all those other guys were useless lol.

You'd think Mercedes could've helped him out of this pinch by naming substitute tires that would work but they probably have to stick with the OE tires.

Yeah, there's something a bit off with this whole story. Defects in relatively new low mileage tires should be covered and I'd be all up in Merc's front office covering my expenses as well. That's not their bargain model car!

My wife picked up a nail in the sidewall of a Pirelli on her XC60 last year and it was difficult to find a replacement. The local shop ended up driving to the dealer to get one. (The one time it would have been better to take the car to the dealer for a tire I guess.) But that was for one tire we needed to match the others. If three tires are bad on a road trip, I'd be looking for anything that fit as others suggested and then sort it out with Mercedes later. They could reimburse him for the temp tires and replace them with proper one's once available.

I had to replace the tires on my 993 about a month ago. Pretty poor selection, the only thing available were NITTO's, I was hoping for Michelin but beggars can't be choosers I guess. So far the NITTO's seem ok, I don't abuse them so I'll live with it. As for the OP, I don't know that I'd suggest telling Benz to take the car back. Surely they could find temporary replacement tires and rims until the supply chain issues are resolved.

What brand were these tires and what was the size?

And how are they not run-flats?

Honestly run-flats in my experience are far worse for blowouts. While a run-flat will protect you if you get a nail in the tire, it seems to be far more susceptible to blow-outs than normal non-runflat tires.

I immediately replaced the runflats on my car with michelin AS4s due to this very reason.

I refused to be stranded in Orlando maybe 3 years ago as we were about to leave our hotel and head back south, only to hear a hissing sound coming from one of my rear tires in my e90. I was riding on 265-30-19’s IRRC and no shop around had any new/used tires in stock. Found two used rear 275-35-19’s and had them installed and called it a day. The 35’s were too tall as it would rub over bumps in the rear but we had to get home. Eventually purchased 275-30’s and the rubbing went away.

People may frown on used tires but in a pinch, I’ll gamble rather than being stranded for days.

Used are better than flat in a pinch.

Also LOL @ those who think Mercedes gives a shit about their customers.

And it's THIS kind of bullshit that makes me appreciate BMW's. Not all of them, of course, as my i8 and i3 were a bitch to get tires for.

But my M5's? Trivial. 285/35R20's have been on a GT-R since 2009 and are now common performance tires. YAY!
