Brought my Kenwood second hand in the late 1980s. Was also a DJ ( mobile & small club ) around that time so had some early Techinics SL1200s Those 401s have certainly become sort after. Love that YouTube video of the guy that makes high end plinths for them No doubt you’ve watched this one ? . |

Count me in as well. I’ve been collecting records since the late 70’s.

Most of these turntables I remember seeing at the the Osan or Clark BX in the 80's I was always a tape guy and then transitioned to CD's.
Albums you couldn't play in a car so that format never worked for me. |

We may have crossed paths; I bought my first set of Yamaha separates at the Clark or Subic exchange in 1981 and my second set at Osan in 1989. My current Yamaha surround-sound receiver I bought from Crazy Eddie's in NYC (Remember them? Ads in audio magazines for discount prices on Yamaha, which were hard to come by in the States) around 2003.

I have an older Yamaha RXV-2090 integrated amplifier that I bought in 94 at Misawa BX, if I bought via the catalog in the states it would have carried a 200 buck Tax Duty. Oh I remember.
The overseas AAFES/NEX stereo quality was dropping when I left in 96 it seems, the BX Not many people were doing HiFi it was video games and PC's at that point. Crazy Eddies is a name I haven't heard of in quite awhile. I was stationed at Pusan in 86 and it closed so I transfered down to Osan for 6 months to get the free 30 days of leave they used to give out for remote tour extensions. I did Cope Thunder in 86 which is why I was over at Clark. After that I bounced around after a stint at Dover De. I took a special duty job. Then after 11 years I got out and went reserves only to be back on AD 5 years later for another 12 years. |

I didn't see any other Dual tables here - this is the CS5000.
My cabinet is a discarded Xray cabinet - makes for a great storage locker - all metal, and built for Xrays (heavier than vinyl) so plenty sturdy. I don't spin much anymore, but I kept my bootlegs, and some rarities. |

The CS-5000 is a very nice table. Especially the one in wood finish.
It has a very nice tonearm. This is my Dual 721 (I think I had 4 or 5 duals over the years, but this is the only one that stayed):

I didn't include a picture in my original post, nothing fancy but here is my Dual 1219. It along with my whole rack could use a good cleaning!

It may be possible, perhaps, that we may have a few (million) records. I can almost guarantee that if it exists...we got a copy of it.
My mom is in her 80's - still goes into work every single day. This has been her file for the last 35 years. Through my childhood she would go to garage sales and flee markets, where they'd price records at 25 cents each...she'd flip through 50 of them, see one that's worth $500...and still talk them down in price. Vinyl's not cheap anymore...that's for sure.

And for the record (pun intended) - player of choice is also Technics. Got this mid-80's. Always wanted a linear tracker like Llarry posted above...just never got into it enough to spend the $$$. Will state there's probably more money in my needle than what the player cost. Took a pic - dust and all. Last record I played on it was Mac Miller.
Safe to say (and displeasure to the entire family) - I went digital with my entire collection. Mom's still pissed at me.

One thing that I've learned spinning vinyl is the need for a stable isolation platform. My Dad used an ArchiDee TNX from Italy that he loaded with sand. I did a bit a research on the product and found out that it was a Stereophile® recommended component back in the days. What are you guys using?

I was never that hard-core and I note you also use a record stabilizer -- another enhancement I've never used.

But what do you do with so much records? I mean that is just way to much to listen to. You'd never go through all of them. Do you also sell them?

In 1983, when I was stationed in Hawaii, Yamaha came out with a couple of liner-tracking turntables. The PX-2 was the top of the line and listed in the US for $900. Signal to noise 80 dB and wow & flutter 0.01%. That was a little rich for me.
But the PX-3 was almost as good and listed in the US for $670. The price in the military exchanges in the Far East was $300ish. That was attainable, and I thought would go well with my mostly-Yamaha system (preamp, power amp, tuner, cassette.) Truth be told, at that point I had a Technics SL-QL1 linear-tracking turntable that worked just fine; I had bought it just before leaving the Philippines for Hawaii. But it was silver and I lusted for that black Yamaha which would match all the other black components I had. I did not qualify to buy at the Far East price in Hawaii. But in the summer of 1983 I did an almost two-month trip in the Western Pacific and being on temporary duty there enabled me to buy at the lower prices. I don't remember what the deal was -- why didn't I buy a PX-3? I guess I was preoccupied with my shipboard duties or something. I do note, however, that they go for a thousand on eBay these days -- pretty impressive, although I don't really pay attention to vintage audio prices. I have no idea whether the Yamaha linear-trackers were good or not; I did manage to grab a couple of brochures, though.

By coincidence, just read this article a couple days ago…
https://www.costar.com/article/83260...lans-expansion Revenue from vinyl sales hit $1.2 billion in 2022 with 41 million units sold, passing CDs in sales in March for the first time in 35 years, according to the Recording Industry Association of America. A 1956 vinyl copy of orchestral recordings of Mozart compositions sold for $19,277 last year on Discogs, an online vinyl collectors’ site. Spin on! B. |

I've got a Technics SLQ2 with ortofon black cartridge going to a Manley Chinook preamp with a Sansui 8080db for amp. I think I'll fire it up tonight!
I also have a Nakamichi tape deck and Sony minidisc player to cover all the (good) dead formats. |
