lots of great information here for starters.

Anyone have an opinion on the Canon 6D? Good for starters?

Looking to buy one on Cyber Monday.

Personally, I would still stay with the primes. But John's comments make sense.

Another reason to shoot cars with longer lenses is that you want a certain amount of compression which you get when shooting at larger focal lengths.

Here is an example. One was shot at 35mm(not such a great shot) and the other at 200mm. Can you see the difference in the background?
Oh I agree with you 100%. The only non-prime fx lens I own is the classic 24-70 2.8

I only use primes when shooting cars, but he said the big thing for him is budget. So i'm sure he'd prefer versatility until he hones his skills.

This is a lens I always recommend no matter if you are starting out or are a seasoned veteran. It's image quality is very high, you can get excellent Bokeh (background/foreground blur) due to its fast Aperture shot all the way open and it's the best value of any lens Nikon/Canon sells. You can take portraits, shoot cars etc. it's also one of the lightest lenses you can find for these DSLr cameras.

It's a bit long for most landscape shots if you are into landscape. But it's a good walk around lens also. The newest version are the 50 1.8G and the 50 1.4G Nikon lenses. They offer the best image quality and focus quicker than previous models.

I recently sold my 50 1.8G and will pick up a 50 1.4G in the near future. Just finiishing up a car project first. If you want to see examples go to Flickr and look at the specific group for the particular lens you are interested in. You will see thousands of real world images by regular folks taken with that lens.

^^^ Just to add to the above post. If you are shooing on a crop sensor, you may want the 35mm 1.8.

I finally got the camera a couple days ago, so far I really like it. Definitely need to learn more, baby steps. Tomorrow i will be going to a nice car show so I had a quick question. When waking around at shows and shooting, do you us auto focus or manual? And here are a couple pictures I've taken so far. Messed around with the editing of the sti rear only, rest are left alone. Let me know what you think and what I can improve on!

I know this is old but nobody responded. Basically I would never use manual focus unless it's too dark for the AF to work or something. The D7200 has an outstanding AF system which is obviously way faster and more accurate than a human. I would set the AF to AF-C single point so you can choose exactly where it's focusing.

I wouldn't be surprised if you've figured this out by know but I'd figure I'd help just in case.
